I'm going to do a review for Demon Souls for the PS3 yeah it's late but this game needs such reviews
Firstly, I need to get this out of the way from the very start this game is hard. Very hard and although from the eastern developers you would expect a JRPG it is in fact very western in it's roots. Everything about it screams Medieval fairy tales however it should be more likened to Grimms fairy tales. This game is dark it's scary but not for the Silent Hill scary reasons but the tense feeling about how hard and how unforgiving this game is. I must also say there is little to no real story line but in this game who cares?
The game starts out very traditionally of an RPG you create your own character and choose between different classes, however it may please you to know that you aren't stuck into the roles of these and you can easily branch out into different ways any class can ,wear any armour ,cast any spells and wield any weapon regardless of class.
There are five different worlds all with 3 stages each world feels different and they look beautiful, you feel like you're entering another place when you go into them. You enter these worlds through the Nexus (the main hub) And there isn't really much to say that it just looks beautiful although I use that loosely the places you go are downright freaky and dark and dingy
Now onto the main piece. To put it simply you are meant to die in the tutorial the boss of the tutorial is so hard you will die. When you are resurrected, you get to keep nearly all of what you had on yourself However, you lose collected souls . Souls are the game's currency, and the primary way of accumulating them is to kill demons. You can't sell looted weapons that you don't need, and you cannot put souls in the bank for use later. You can hold onto them, spend them on important items , or use them to improve your core attributes (such as endurance, strength, and so on).you respawn back a checkpoint (which are not that frequent) and a blood stain is put where you die if you make it back to that blood stain on your first try you will regain your souls if not then you've lost it all and a new blood stain is placed where you died
The way multiplayer is placed in this game I really do enjoy The way you can interact with each others world via co-op (co-op is a longer thing to explain it involves how souls in the game work and I honestly can't explain it besides to say it is good) Even without co-op you can write notes down to help players and if enough people rate said note then it will stay there for longer you can also see other players blood stains which is not only useful but in many cases amusing
In conculsion this game is a very fun and one of the hardest games of the last 2 years I have played. But it's not hard in the frustrating way it's hard in a way where you go "oh I know how to deal with this now" you never feel like the game has changed it's own rules to up the challenge If you own a ps3 I advise you get this game now one of the best RPGs of the year If you liked the Diablo series you will love this
Gameplay 9/10 Amazingly fun and challenging
Story-7/10 the story as I said is non-existant but a lot of the shop characters and people in that world I find them believable and hell I even liked them
Graphics- 9/10 the game as I said is amazing
Replayabilty- 10/10 I mean. It continues with the New game+ idea that many games have used but in this game it Always feels like a challenge there is never a point where you feel like "man i'm so bloody powerful I can kick everything's ass"
overall 9/10 A challenging game that will grip you spin you around and then kick you repeatedly
(also please critque my writing style as much as possible so I may improve)
