I bought the new slim Xbox 360, and i was playing Fallout New Vegas on it for a couple of hours, the xbox is supposedly not supposed to overheat, but mine got really hot, like i touched the top of it and it was almost hot enough to burn me, it was also giving off this weird smell, like when you first turn on the heater in a car, I was wondering if this is normal or just a defective xbox, my old one never got this hot ever, anybody else had this happen?
What you are smelling or smelled is either ozone (Produced by electric discharge in oxygen.) or burning plastic. Your X-Box 360 Slim is going to die if you keep using it. Send it back as soon as possible and do not turn it on. Your cooling system was either faulty when shipped, something went terribly wrong while playing Fallout: New Vegas or you placed your 360 in a bad location, causing it to be unable to disperse heat properly.
When you turn any older heater that has been in a moist environment the rust burns off of the heating element and it smells like burning plastic. To test if it's ozone sacrifice a 9 volt (or small-sized) battery by taking a wire and short-circuiting between the terminals to make sparks. If what you smell is the same smell that was coming from your 360, it's would be a very good idea to never turn it on again.
When a company says that a system is not supposed to over-heat, they mean that it will not over-heat under regular operating conditions. Area temperature of 20 °C (68 °F) to 25 °C (77 °F), solid metal or hard-wood surface underneath and plenty of space for heat dispersion.
As consoles are not video games, would this thread not be more appropriately placed in the Computers & Technology section? It is as far as I've seen also the tech support section and the problem the topic creator is having does fall in line with tech support.
