You're welcome. I'll just say, though, that the first two SMT games are really quite ugly - they do that 16-bit console version of a 3D maze for their dungeons. Even NPC areas are done in this style, like your own home and the nearby mall. A further problem is that the NPCs are sprites in a 3D world (like the enemies in Doom) but they reappear and disappear depending on where you stand or look and will automatically talk to you (repeating the same thing) each time they appear next to you.
It's hard to explain properly, so just look for the game and the translation and you'll see what I mean. If you can get over that (I must admit, I couldn't but many SMT fans could) then it's meant to be a very deep game with an incredibly interesting storyline - you just have to really work for it.
Although
if... wasn't translated, if you get the PS1 version you can use this
Let's Play article to guide you through the game. Or you could screw the game and just read the Let's Play in order to get an idea of what happens. Whatever you prefer.
The whole franchise came from a book written in the 80s. That book spawned two games that were on the Famicom/NES amongst other platforms. They were just called Megami Tensei (Reincarnation of the Goddess) and they of course led to the Shin Megami Tensei series, that in turn leading to all the spin-offs like Persona.
You can see a translation of the original book
