Which of the 3 types of encounter system do you prefer when you play rpg's?
RANDOM ENCOUNTER:
These games will have infinite number of enemies, wherever enemies are located:
PRE-DETERMINED ENCOUNTERS AT SPECIFIC POINTS:
Enemies are only located at specific points on the map/area that you are located. You have to come into contact with them to trigger the encounter:
PRE-DETERMINED RANDOM ENCOUNTERS:
My personal favorite. You can only get a specific number of encounters in each area, but they are still random. You must walk around to trigger these encounters.
As you can see from the video, there is a bar at the bottom left of the screen(at the 1:00 mark). Once it's been depleted, you must leave the area and return if you wish to encounter more enemies.
So, fellow gamers, which one is the best? Also, which one do you hate the most? One last thing, if something like this already exists, just tell me and I'll report this thread myself so it'll be deleted.
Pre-determined encounters. Baten Kaitos and the Tales series makes good use of this system. Enemies appear on screen and they're unlimited as long as you exit and the re-enter the area.
I love that because I'm not forced to battle if I don't feel like it. Comes in handy when you're in the middle of a delivery quest of something like that and you don't want any interruptions.
i would have to go with random. i don't liek predetermined because then it means i can't power-level, which is what i do most of the game (Magna Carta is an example)
but i agree with Rbz about FFXII battle system which is ironically my favorite FF games aside from XI but isn't that encounter system sorta predetermined too, but then again, no load time between enounter and battle is a definate plus
also i want to be clear, do predetermined systems have a set amount of monsters or can the monster respawn if you walk out of sight/view?

Depends on the game. For example, on Baten Kaitos, monsters respawn every time you reenter an area. Paper Mario on the other hand, the enemies only appear once and you have to leave the entire level for them to appear again.
I prefer pre-determined random encounters, especially the ones that replenish enemies when you load the game. That way, you can move through the dungeon quickly if you want, or you can stay by the save point and save-then-load to replenish the enemies (best of both worlds).
For anyone who grew up with a Nes playing Final Fantasy 1 and Dragon Warrior 1 it must an will be random.
You mean the kind of games people hate for their absurdly high encounter rate that makes going through dungeons ten times more aggravating than it should be? Fuck that. Pre-determined encounters at specific points is my choice. It gives me the option of NOT wasting my time so I can say "Fuck that" and just jump over an enemy group.
I think they all have their ups and downs and it's less about which is better by itself and how they're used in games. If you have random encounters but constantly have to grind just because the people designing the game felt like you should need to just because you could then it's bad. If having limited encounters in a game where you are always barely powerful enough to win it's bad too.
