{As the sun rises, providing the sky and the lawn a warm reddish-orange glow, Julie wakes up to the sound of birds chirping in a nest in a tree above your head.}
Julie: (groaning) What…the hell? Man, I gotta stop over-exerting myself…
{Out of nowhere, a sparrow flew onto Julie's shoulder. She looks as it hopped merrily on her wrist.}
Julie: The Universe just loves to screw me, doesn't it? (She tries to shake the bird off.) Piss off, you little weirdo.
Voice: Hey! At least I’m not the one with a face full of dirt!
Julie: (Looking around) Wha-?!? W-who said that?!?
Voice: Ahem! Look up, retard.
{She slowly looks up and sees a sparrow standing on her head, which, oddly enough, was glaring at her.}
Julie: …So…you're a talking bird?
Sparrow: Of course I'm not! I’m a human, just like you and mostly everyone else in the world!
Julie: I really find that hard to believe.
{In a puff of smoke, the sparrow transforms into a woman. She has glossy blue eyes and moderately lengthy black hair, stylized with bangs in the front. She also wears a black sweat suit.}
Woman: Do you believe me NOW!?
Julie: …Who are you, anyway?
Stephanie: The name’s Stephanie McMillan, Head of the Recruitment Department of the Black Orchids.
Julie: The what?
Stephanie: Here… just take this.
{Stephanie pulls a black notebook out of her pocket and gives to Julie.}
Julie: What am I supposed to with this?
Stephanie: Hold on to it.
Julie: For what?
Stephanie: You'll understand…in time. Right now, think of it as an “appointment book”.
{Julie quietly gets up and starts walking towards the house.}
Stephanie (mentally): Is she really supposed to be the girl we’re looking for? She doesn’t seem that-(verbally) Hey, wait up! (Runs after Julie) At least tell me when you’re going to up and walk away!
Julie: Something about this place…is so familiar…
(The two approach the broken sliding door right in front of them.)
Stephanie: Wow, this place has really gone to hell. Why are you even here, anyway?
Julie: I don’t know…I think something in the house was calling out to me…and still is.
Stephanie: Well…you want to take a peek inside?
{They walk through the doorway and starts looking around the ruined den for anything useful. Suddenly, Julie’s eye catches a glint of light coming from a nearby corner. She goes over to investigate it.}
Stephanie: Why did you find?
Julie: (Picks up the shiny object) A key. But, what does it open?
Stephanie: Now that you mention it…I think that I saw a door that this could open.
Julie: I think it’s too small to open a door.
Stephanie: Maybe it opens this giant case over here? (Points to a large metal crate that is sitting in a closet in front of her.) Let me see that key for a sec.
{Julie throws her the key to her and she uses it to unlock the case, which opens with a large burst of steam. Inside of the case was...a messenger bag. The two women stare at it with looks of disappointment.}
Julie: You’ve gotta be kidding me.
Stephanie: Aww, man! I thought it would be something cool, like a mystical spear, or a super-powerful space gun! This is-
Julie: Wait a minute…I remember this thing now…this is my dad’s old training bag! But…I don’t even know if there’s anything in here.
{She reaches her hand inside the bag and pulls out a large, polished bokken made out of cocobolo wood.}
Julie: No way...
Stephanie: What’s that?
Julie: It looks like a wooden sword to-
{She zones out as a vision of her past pops into her head. In this vision, Julie is a young girl (about 11), practicing her kenjutsu by sparring in an open field with a tall, gruff older man. They were both wearing kimonos, in order to “practice like they did in the old days”. The two were furiously swinging at each other and blocking each other’s hits with their swords.}
Julie: You’re getting sloppy, old man!
Older Man: Oh, yeah? Then, how come you haven been able to land a hit on me, ya little runt?
{They continue to swing at each other, until…}
Julie: (quietly): Gotcha.
Older Man: Huh?
{She hits the man as hard as she could in his side and he falls over in pain. He tries to get up, only to have Julie’s bokken pointed directly towards his face.}
Julie: Face it, Dad. You. Lost.
Julie’s Father: Okay, okay. Ya got me…now come on, help your old man up.
{She grabs his hand and pulls him up onto his feet.}
Julie’s Father: So, tomorrow’s the big day, huh?
Julie: Hmm? Yeah, I guess so.
Julie’s Father: Come on! Why aren’t you excited? In a couple more hours, you’ll be the youngest person to ever be promoted to menkyo.
Julie: I am. Its just…I feel like I’ve wasted so much of my life with this kenjutsu stuff…
Julie’s Father: You haven’t wasted your life…you found something you wanted to do and stuck with it. I, on the other hand…I wasted almost 30 years of my life doing mindless bullshit. But, I can thank one mindless decision for turning that all around.
Julie: What’s that?
Julie’s Father: …Adopting you. So, kiddo…you wanna go get something to eat?
Julie: Only if you’re ready lay some golden eggs to pay for the bill!
{The two start laughing. Then, in an instant, Julie feels a sharp pain in her chest and starts gasping for air. Afterwards, she collapses.}
Julie’s Father: Julie, what’s wrong? (Fading out) Julie…Julie…
{Back in the current time, Stephanie is waving her hand in front of Julie. She snaps out of her trance.}
Stephanie: Julie! Are you with me, now?
Julie: I-I’m fine. I just got light-headed, that’s all.
Stephanie: So, do you know what that thing is, or don’t you?
Julie: It’s my dad’s training sword…
Stephanie: I don’t think anything else is in that bag.
Julie: I guess I’ll just take it with me, just in case I need to put something inside of it.
Stephanie: So…are you ready to leave now?
Julie: I’m not going anywhere until I find some clothes.
Stephanie: I think I might be able to help you with that…
Julie: How?
Stephanie: Wait here a second. I’ll fly back home and see if I can find something that will fit you.
{Stephanie turns back into a sparrow and flies off.}
Julie: Oh, great. And what am I supposed to do until she gets back?
{Suddenly, she starts to hear scribbling from inside the book that Stephanie gave her. She opens it to find this written on the 1st page…)
Assignment No.1
Target’s name: Alex Granado
Not much is know about this guy, other than the fact that he was involved with a $2,000,000 cocaine deal. You have been hired to assassinate him at an upscale party happening downtown in a week. Also, since this is your first mission, you will be working with a partner that has more experience in this field than you.
If you complete this assignment, we will put $250,000 into your bank account. Fail, and you will be killed.
That is all.
Julie: So…this is it…my first assignment.
Stephanie: By the way I happened to get a look at your partner. He was adorable! I might just have to take him from you!
[Julie turns around and, much to her surprise, Stephanie was right behind her.]
Julie: Did you get me some clothes?
Stephanie: Of course! Hope you like Toliver…
{She throws Julie a pair of jeans, a long-sleeved shirt, and a zip-up sweater. After changing her clothes…}
Julie: These fit pretty well. How did you know what size I wore?
Stephanie: Call it “a woman’s intuition”. Now, come on! We have to go meet your partner. Do you have a car?
Julie: Of course not! That wall that I hit the other day made sure of that!
Stephanie: Well, isn’t that just great…
Julie: Hold on! I think I there’s something we can use in my bag.
{She pulls a remote out of her bag.}
Stephanie: What does that thing do?
Julie: I don’t know. Only one way to find out…
{She presses a button on the remote andpart of the wall that surrounds the house opens up, revealing a motorcycle. Julie hops onto it.}
Stephanie: Do you even remember how to ride a motorcycle?
Julie: Nope! But that doesn’t mean I can’t try! (She starts the motorcycle up and starts revving it.) Now, catch me if you can!
(Julie flies out of the back yard and onto the street.)
Stephanie: UGGGHHH!
{She turns back into a sparrow and flies after Julie and eventually catches up to her. She transforms back into her human form and hops on the motorcycle.}
Stephanie: You dimwit!! How could you leave me behind! You don’t even know were we’re supposed to be going!!
Julie: Is this it?
Stephanie: Of course n-(She checks the address.) Wow, got it right on the first try. I thought we would’ve wound up drowning in the Humber River with your crappy sense of direction.
Julie: Oh, ha-ha. Very funny.
{As Julie looked around in awe, she noticed that the area looked high-end and upscale, just like the house.}
Stephanie: Are you done sightseeing?
Julie: Oh…uh…yeah. Let’s go.
Stephanie: Sorry, I can’t go with you. I just remembered that I’ve got some important business to attend to back at HQ. I’ll catch up with you later. Bye!
{She teleports away, leaving Julie in a pissed off mood.}
Julie: That BITCH! How could she up and leave me again, especially when we were supposed to be doing something important?!?
(She gets of the bike and walks up to the porch.)
Julie: Okay, Julie…calm down…don’t wanna let this guy get the wrong impression of me…(Inhales deeply, then exhales.)…Okay, I’m ready.
{Then, she takes a deep breath and slowly opens the door. As soon as she does, she feels a sharp item poke her in the stomach.}
Julie: What the?
{The last thing she sees before blacking out is a guy with a syringe in his hand, smirking at her.}
