Alright. I had this dream one night that was OBVIOUSLY inspired by watching too much Kamen Rider. Thing is, when I shared it with my GF she thought it sounded like an AWESOME story, so I decided to actually write it down. The disclaimer here being that I haven't written anything in a while, and NEVER for other people to actually read, AND this is a 'vomit draft' with no editing or proof reading. With that said, enjoy the first chapter of Dream for the Future. And yes, constructive. feedback/compliments are encouraged.
Chapter 1
Start up.
All was going well in the environmental research lab. The recent inspection had revealed that the massive geodesic sphere that comprised the majority of the complex was still structurally sound, and the various flora planted on the gravity plating were flourishing. Darren Vyers ,and Eric Perkins, two researchers who had gone to college together, and entered the facility at the same time, were having lunch inside of the massive structure suspended in the middle of the sphere. They chatted lightly to each other as they watched the botanists work outside.
"So that's really how it ended? He just rides off into the sunset?" Darren asked, taking a bite of his sandwich.
"Yeah, he just leaves the girl and-" Eric was interrupted by a researcher from the energy labs named Stephen.
"Hey guys!" Stephen whispered. "Come by my lab later... I've got something cool I want to show you guys!" Darren and Eric exchanged looks before Darren continued. "Trust me! You guys'll like it!" He smiled at them, it was an infectious smile that they couldn't help returning.
"Alright Stephen. We'll head on down there after we finish lunch ok?" Darren said, lifting up his sandwich for emphasis.
"Great!" Stephen said as he clapped his hands together. "I'll see you there!"
"So what's this great thing you want... Is that a giant beetle?" Darren asked, pointing at a device on Stephen's lab table.
"No no! It's only shaped like a giant beetle! It's actually easier to just show you than explain." Said Stephen as he handed a bizarre looking metal belt to the perplexed looking scientist. "Put that on! You too Eric. I made 2 prototypes."
"Why two?" Darren asked as he fastened the belt behind him.
"In case one of them blows up!" Stephen said with far too much enthusiasm, causing Darren and Eric to exchange another -slightly more worried- look. He handed them each one of the metalic bettles. "Now slide those into place on the belt and shout an activation codeword. The word itself doesn't matter, but will be the permanent keyword for the system.
After another look and a shrug they both thought for a second.
"Begin!" Shouted Darren.
"Engage!" Shouted Eric.
"Start up!" The belts replied before emitting a bright flash. Inside the flash billions of nanites were working to configure themselves into a vaguely insectoid exoskeleton around the 2 scientists. "Complete!" They examined their new outfits for a few seconds before Darren felt compelled to ask the obvious question.
"So what are these for?" Darren asked as he tried to get a look at the back of the suit.
"It's my idea for the next generation in hazardous environment suits! The basic suit increases strength, and provides protection against extremes of heat and cold BUT!" And he emphasized that in a way that made it obvious that if he wasn't stopped he could continue for quite a long time. "The nanites inside the main unit reconfigure the nature of the whole thing based on what modules are used! I see all kinds of uses for this!" He walked back over to his lab table and pointed to several half completed beetles. "Construction, mining, nuclear clean up, deep sea work, in theory with the right modules it could do just about anything!" He paused and looked serious for just a moment. "Just about..." Quickly regaining his cheery composure he turned back to the two scientists.
"Anyways, keep these for now, get used to moving around in them in your spare time, I'm making you two my guinea pigs for these!" Then as if suddenly realizing what exactly he had told them to take home with them he added "Just don't uh... wear them around in public. I'm kinda trying to keep these under wraps until I've got all the ah... 'bugs' worked out."
Darren and Eric gave each other what they assumed were confused looks beneath the suits helmets before Eric finally spoke up. "So uh... how do we take these off?"
Stephen smiled and walked briskly over to him, bending uncomfortably close to his waist. "Simple, just push in on the eyes and pull the unit back off the be-"
"Shutting Down!" The belts both said in unison as the two researchers were relieved to see that they still had their clothing on as the exoskeletons dissolved into a nanotech haze.
