First attempt at a poem (literally, never turned one in when I was in high school. Grades didn't mean much)
How long has it been
Since I've not awoken to gunfire?
How far have we gone
Only to meet death once more?
How hard do we desire
Yet we die all the same?
How often do we search
For faceless men to blame?
How long has it been
Since I returned home?
How far have we gone
To still see dying friends?
How hard do we desire
To forget all the days?
How often do we search
For somewhere to belong?
How long has it been
Since I saw her face?
How far have we gone
Away from Hades' gates?
How hard do we desire
To return to days of war?
How often do we search
For comrades long gone?
How long has it been
Since I was buried in dirt?
How far have we gone
Are we all eaten by the Earth?
How hard do we desire
To live again once more?
How often do we search
Just beyond death's door?
How long has it been?
No time has passed
How far have we gone?
We're standing in place
How hard do we desire?
We stand devoid of want
How often do we search?
We have never lost
For we are still there
Fighting this war
We have not moved in body
Only in spirit
Far above the burning fields and carrion birds
To somewhere into the future
A future to which we don't belong
Not in body
Not even in spirit
For we are of this war
We are of the past
