I've finally finished planning my novel after several years and I'm using many different communities to critique, edit and advise me while I write it. So feel free to say what you want! I will try to check back as often as possible.
I will be looking for artists for a number of reasons as I complete the novel. A few of those are:
Character Portraits
Maps
Environments
Scenes
Cover-art
Fan-art is always accepted and if it takes my fancy I will pay you accordingly for the copyrights to your work and give you credit when the novel is finished if I decide to use it.
I will use spoiler boxes when it becomes necessary to do so.
The Winds of Sorrow
Prelude: The White Dwarves
[size=10]"Having dreams you want to come true and dreams you can’t reach
That itself becomes the dream, becomes the hope for people to go on living" - Jun Maeda[/h]
In a small clearing surrounded by towering coniferous trees and enormous mountains as far as the eye can see, there is a magical pond unlike any other. Those who have come across it leave changed indefinitely. It is, however; up to the heart of the person whether they change for the better, or for the worse. This is not where our tale begins though, it starts in the most south-eastern corner of this unnamed world, in a region called Umbra.
Umbra is a vast expanse of frozen glaciers, mountains and unspeakable horrors forever hidden from the sun under a sheet of dark clouds. In this bleak and desolate place, two dwarven civilizations vie for survival against the most brutal nature known to the inhabitants of this world. One is called Eecore and the other Nathul'. There is little difference between these two civilizations; their histories are wrought with turmoil.
The dwarves of Eecore and Nathul' have grown to hate the world beyond their mountain halls and of course, they feel their hatred is justified. After all, why would their ancestors lead them to a place where none travel, where nary but the strongest, most intelligent and cold-hearted survive? Why should they be kind to those who have known the warmth of the sun's rays? And why, above all else, should their hearts be warmer than the winds around their homes? They do not know love and they do not care if they ever do. They work for their own gain and will crush anyone, even fellow dwarves, if they stand in their way.
The dwarves of Eecore and Nathul' are extremely pale because of their environement and have become known across the world as "The White Dwarves". They are legends among reuglar folk, some say they do not even exist! And many other names have been given to them by those that have seen them, though I'm sure you will recognize them as they come.
The White Dwarves do not have the average size, shape or inner-workings of your regular every-day dwarf. Thousands of years have tailored their bodies to the extreme cold. Their torsos are larger, harder and they have more fat surrounding their muscles. Their arms and legs are shorter and their heart beats at a much faster pace (Because of this White Dwarves have a shorter lifespan than regular Dwarves.) in order to generate more more heat.
Because of their smaller size and their environment, White Dwarves are even less flexible than their cousins but make up for it with their unfathomable strength. Their strength is so great that the current king of Nathul', Orum Frostbeard, once took down a two-headed ogre with his bare hands. Some say it was a dragon, but we all know how much dragons love roast dwarf for dinner. Especially with all of that delicious fat!
The mountain halls of Eecore and Nathul' are small and heated by a complex system of obsidian machinery which pumps magma from deep below the earths surface into shafts that run behind the walls in corridors. Each civilization uses an extremely large, complex network of different rooms, corridors and halls that are all inter-connected. It would take hundreds of years to memorize the countless passageways and where they lead to. And since a large portion of the Dwarves living there have actually been around for that long, they have a massive advantage over any enemy intruders. There are many entrances to their grand fortresses, yet the entrances are not grand themselves, they are small and hidden behind sheets of snow, located at varying ranges of heights. Some entrances are near the top of a mountain, while others can be mid-way and a very low amount are located at the bottom.
- To be continued in Prelude: The White Dwarves - Part 3 - The Society of the White Dwarves. (There will be around 4-5 parts for the prelude.)
