[Summer Contest Entry 2012] The Meeting

I was drowning in her blue eyes. Bright, brilliant,...beautiful. The sort of eyes that men have lost themselves since time immemorial and I was certainly no exception. I met the love of my life that night and will never forget it.

The afternoon sky that day displayed resplendent hues of burnt orange red and hints of creeping purple. It was just like the skies frozen in time on canvasses, pictures, those cheesy bookstore calenders since the advent of art. I had spent the week enjoying everything this resort beach town had to offer along with my friends. I left them behind when my whims decided that I wanted to spend my last night experiencing the town for myself without the blatant tourist traps. A naive notion considering I haven't left the resort grounds proper since landing here. I considered for a moment, and then I walked into that peaceful, charming town.

The streets were calm that day almost reverential for the performance of the setting sun. I wandered my way through the streets the cool ocean breeze my constant companion. I admired the architecture all uniformed in white base and baby blue trim huddled together tightly as if they were cold. Glanced through storefronts as I meandered past them. Acknowledged a few people with a polite nod as they came and went. However, my gaze always found itself toward that alluring sky.

I couldn't tell you how long I was exploring but I can tell you what stopped me. The scent was intoxicating, that unmistakeable aroma of meat sizzling on a grill. This did not go unnoticed by my body as a loud grumble erupted from my stomach. A subtle chuckle turned my head as I spied its source. A wizened woman flashed a yellowed four-tooth smile at me before turning back to her grill. She was rotating a couple of kebabs with each hand while I stole a peek at her wares. The meat was absolutely glistening on the stick. A drop of juice dripped unto the glowing coals below and released a fresh blast of that seductive smell. I was sold. A moment later I inquired about the price and without turning around the ancient woman pointed to a small sign attached to her prep table. I left enough for three kebabs on the table and seconds later she took the money and presented my meal. I thanked her and she nodded back accentuated by that personable smile.

The sky's creeping purple which were mere hints before threatened to envelop the rest of heaven's hues as I continued my aimless journey. I threw out one of the bare sticks as I passed a rubbish bin and eagerly started on my second. Truly a paradise I thought to myself as a soothing wind caressed my cheek. I bit into the taste of ambrosia on a stick and closed my eyes to savor it. They opened and found their way up again to the darkening but still gorgeous sk-- a bump, a peep, and a muffled crash of something on pavement.

I found myself on my arse and took a couple of seconds to shake off my surprise. Brushing off some of the debris I started to scan for the damage I wrought. I spied a few cans, a clutter of a variety of fruits and vegetables, and a couple of bruised brown bags at the epicenter of the wreckage. An immediate pang of guilt struck me as I started to gather everything. I heard a subdued, "Ow" and then I saw her. She was still on the ground with a hand behind her to support her upper body, long slender bare legs strewn about, and her other hand across her eyes obscuring her face her. Another guilt sledgehammer landed as I went to help her up. "I'm sorry." I delivered with the utmost regret alive in my voice. I offered my hand hoping she would accept my aid. There was a pause a painful, staggering moment in time until... The young woman sighed and said, "I suppose it was half my fault as well, sir. My head was in the clouds again." Her warm delicate hand took mine.

Maybe it was the blackening sky or perhaps it was just the chaos of the moment, but I haven't had the chance to get a clear look at my unfortunate victim's face until the moment I brought her to her feet. Our eyes met and I was struck dumb. Have I ever seen anything so lovely in my life. My pulse quickened, my body was transfixed in place, and my throat went dry... too dry. -Hack- -Hack- My hands instinctively wrapped themselves around my throat as I came to the horrid realization that I was choking. Done in by the most delicious piece of street food I've ever had and the most overwhelmingly beautiful pair of eyes I've ever seen. Through all that hubbub and awe I forgot how to chew and swallow. Suddenly I felt a pair of lithe, but surprisingly strong arms coiled around my abdomen; accompanied by soft, warm and above all pleasant sensation on my back.

The half chewed piece of meat landed harmlessly a couple feet ahead of me. My rescuer patted my back gently as I was regaining my bearings "Aren't you just a walking disaster Mr. Tourist." she said with an elegant laugh. A slight reddening flushed my cheeks half from embarrassment the other half from my recent lack of oxygen. I thanked her with great flourish and said, "I guess I am miss. There's just something absolutely mesmerizing about this town and sky." And you I thought to myself. With a hand placed confidently on her hip she gave me a wry smile and remarked, "Well I can't fault you for that." We both glanced at her grocery pile and started to salvage what we could. I enthusiastically offered to pay for everything, but she replied with a shake of her head highlighted by her hair tied (by the most peculiar set of hair pins) neatly into long swaying pigtails and a wave of her hand. "No it's alright a little dirt won't kill me." she declared. I adamantly insisted and the young woman eventually relented "You're as stubborn as you are clumsy." she joked whilst handing me her grocery bags. "Come on it isn't far."

The night sky was awash with celestial bodies and the moon hung huge overhead seemingly at home in the sea of stars. A breathtaking sight to be sure, but the heavens didn't hold much of my attention as when I embarked on my little trek. The young woman, walking a few steps ahead of me, struck quite the figure bathed in moonlight. She wore a pale red summer dress with gossamer lace highlight up her lower back, a white belt coiled around her thin waist, and a striped pair of alternating pink and white strapped sandals. She turned her head, displaying her stunning features, and quipped, "Well here we are. Mr. Clumsy." I was caught unawares. I couldn't fathom the concept of time or distance ever since I had glimpsed into her eyes.

Placing the bags down at her door errant thoughts raced through my mind growing in intensity as every millisecond passed Is this it? Will I ever see her again? I don't even know her name yet. I started "Miss, again I can't say how sorry--" "Bah, it's fine stop apologizing and stop it with the miss. My name is Momoka Fakku." she finished.Her name is Momoka huh.Her introduction put me at ease "Well in that case my name is Julian. A pleasure to make your acquaintance though I can't say it was under the best of circumstances." I delivered with a genuine smile. Momoka paused a moment with her bright, beautiful eyes seemingly wider than before and a subtle blush upon her cheek. With a hand over her mouth she feigned a cough, "No I can't say that it was Julian." she finally responded. The young woman unlocked her baby blue painted door and walked inside. I stood at her door with the grocery bags still by my feet. Without missing a beat she said, "Well what are you waiting for? Bring in those bags."

We talked into the night. Laughed at each of our stories, especially the one we shared together earlier that night. Drank our coffee to fuel our constant banter into the early hours of the morning. And when the sun rose I passionately declared that I loved her and she responded with a kiss so sweet it hurt. She and I knew that soon I had to make my way back to catch my flight to the city. We cried in each others arms when it was time. I turned for the door and stopped. I looked back and saw my love's sullen face--her red tear-stained blue eyes. I embraced her until my plane flew away.

I'm a constant browser of the site (though haven't been on the forums at all) and saw this contest on the front page and had to register to be a part of it. I've always loved a good creative writing exercise.

I wanted to keep her identity secret for as long as I could, but I inserted some hints. I hope I didn't do the character a disservice with my portrayal. I also had to truncate a few details and descriptives and the ending is a bit rushed to fit into the 1500 word limit (I think I barely made it under 1500 by my count). I was also contemplating writing a sex scene but ran out of word limit and didn't want to edit any of my earlier paragraphs to fit one in. Also I just thought it really didn't feel right for the overall tone of the story.

I think I covered all the themes, site reference, and procedure down; but if I could get a check from a mod to see if I have all the requirements in order to be eligible for the contest, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

When I read the part "My name is Momoka Fakku" the first thought that I had was "My name is Momoka Fuck Off."

Sounds like something she would say doesn't it.
