The Corpse-dragger
“We were always together… but I guess it’s time we part ways.”
Those were the last words I ever heard from him.
How could I just accept that he was gone when we have been together since the first time I saw the light of day?
Mother told me that when I was born, it wasn’t some doctor’s face nor was it hers that I first saw, it was my brother’s. The first bath I took, I did it with him. When I was learning how to walk, he was there by my side, helping me in every step. Even until he breathed his last, he put up with all my shortcomings and incompetence as his sibling.
He didn’t deserve the way he died. It was so foolish.
Before the incident, I was completely obsessed with balls. Be it a basketball, a tennis ball, a golf ball, you name it. Their perfectly round shape and bounciness were simply irresistible to my past self.
We were on our way to the library to rent a book he needed for an experiment. Just as we were about to cross the street, a stray rubber sphere was rebounding on the other side. My addiction led me to dragging my brother whilst the light for pedestrians was lit bright red. A blinding glow shone on my right.
It took a while for my mind to process what had happened.
I felt a lack of resistance behind me. As I turned around, there he was; in the middle of the road, his head flattened with streaks of black. His blood slowly inched towards my limbs, dying them crimson and rooting them in place.
Terror kept me stunned for what seemed to be an eternity. I started to question reality as tears streamed down my face.
A change occurred within me, as if my mind geared itself to a new direction. I realized. I could not let his death keep me from living my life to the fullest. I had to live on, for his sake, and for my own.
He may have lost his life, but he will forever live on, here, by my side. If he can hear me right now, the only thing I can say is…
“Cat, I’m still sorry for the stupidity I possessed in the past. Can you see me now? I studied. Maybe now, I’m as smart as you were back then. Your loving brother, Dog. Hi-ho-diggity!”
