Night Patrols

Eila stirred fitfully, tossing under her covers. The sun was just coming up over the horizon and cast warm streaks of light through her windows.
"Eh... it's cold. Sanya, are you hogging the blanket..." she muttered, pulling it up around her. Feeling no resistance, she rolled back a bit reaching her arm out gently to the side. Nothing there.
Sitting up, she looked at the streak of the bed that Sanya normally took up. It was still smooth, with no sign of the small Orussian girl, nor were pieces of uniform scattered across the floor.
"Huh," Eila said. "Guess she's finally staying in her room." Eila rolled over and pulled the covers to her chin to squeeze another couple of hours of rest out of the morning. Sleep, however, was elusive as Eila's mind spun.
"I wonder why," Eila pondered out loud, rolling on her back and crossing her arms over her head. "I wonder why she's not here. I mean, I TOLD her not come in. But she never listens to me. It's not like anything happened," She told herself, "Because I'd know. I mean, WE'D know. The Witches."
Eila shook her head, trying to push those thoughts aside. "No way, no way.... If she was hurt it'd be all over the base. Unless...." she considered, "Unless something really bad happened If she was ambushed and couldn't send a warning, nobody would know would they. Not until she... didn't come home."
Sitting up and staring at the cold space on her bed, Eila had her robe wrapped hastily around her and was well out the door before she even thought about where to go.
'Infirmary first,' she thought hastily, 'To see if she's hurt or...' Suppressing a shudder, Eila shook her head, 'After that The flight tower, see if they have her on Radar or can raise her on radio. Or maybe the night duty roster to see if she's logged'.
"Should I hit the Tower first though," She wondered aloud, "It's closer than the Infirmary... but if she's there I want to get there as soon as possible..." Hustling down the hallway, Eila nearly missed the soft mewing sounds coming from her right. Skidding to a stop on her heels, she realized she was right outside of Sanya's room.
Her knees went weak and she sagged against the wall, sighing deeply in relief. Looking around quickly, she snapped back to attention with a blush. "I-idiot, "she chastised herself aloud, "Panicking like that... Of course she's all right. I should just go back to bed. After I see her."
Looking to the left and right, Eila crept up to the door, slowly opening it. Sanya's room was blacked out as normal, and the dim gloom made it impossible to see anything. Eila opened her mouth to say something but froze, unsure of what to say. Creeping through the dark, her eyes were slowly getting used to the murk.
Eila heard it again, that soft plaintive mew. Squinting against the shadows, she could barely see a lump under the sheets, rolling restlessly. Leaning to the side, the glow from the doorway behind her cast a soft shaft of light on the back of the Sanya's pale hair.
Eila smiled softly, 'Thank goodness,' she thought to herself.
"Mmm..." the fitful voice under the sheets murmured, "P-papa... Where are you papa?" She tossed and turned under the sheets. "Why can't I find you papa."
'Dreaming?' Eila thought, her heart aching for the small girl. 'She hasn't had a nightmare in ages... not since she started to... oh..."
Now that she knew Sanya was safe, Eila was torn. She didn't want to abandon her, but she couldn't bring herself the wake the sleeping Sanya either. She pulled Sanya's blankets up gently, tucking them in warmly around the tossing girl and kissed her softly on the forehead.
Turning to leave in the dark, however, she tripped, her arms flailing wildly before she crashed to the floor. As the familiar soft green glow of Sanya's sensory magic filled the room, Eila uttered a strangled squeal and scrambled under the bed to hide. Holding her breath, she watched the green light track sleepily around the room before it flickered and went out.
Breathing a sigh a few moments later, Eila began to slide herself slowly out from under the bed when she heard, "Eila... what are you doing under there..." from above.
Scrambling up to a sitting position beside the bed she came face to face with Sanya, who was rubbing her bleary eyes gently with both hands.
"Uh..." Eila began, stalling to think of something, "Sorry... I mean about waking you up. I guess you heard me, huh."
Sanya shook her head, "No... I can smell your perfume... You always put Lily of the Valley perfume on before you go to bed. It's nice."
"N-no... I don't. I mean, it's not for any particular reason! It's just.. Uh..."
Sanya cocked her head to one side, looking at Eila's blushing face. "So why are you here?"
"I-I-I... was just walking by you see. And I heard you... um... talking in your sleep," Eila said, nodding, "Yes, talking in your sleep, and I was worried that... some Neuroi spy might overhear military secrets?" she finished half-heartedly.
"You came to check on me?" Sanya asked.
"Yes. NO! I mean," Eila spluttered, "I mean, I was... a little worried. Because you didn't come to my room like usual."
"Oh," Sanya said softly, "But, you told me to sleep in my own room, didn't you?"
"Yes. I did do that," Eila said, "Of course I said that. Right, so... right. I just didn't realize you were going to actually do it. I mean," she corrected herself hastily, blushing, "I mean that you were going to start doing that today."
"Oh..."
"So..." Eila said, untangling herself from the floor and standing up, "So... now then I guess we just go back to bed. Our beds. Separately."
"Yes," Sanya whispered softly, rolling over. "G-good night, Eila."
"Good night, Sanya," Eila said quietly, turning to leave. She was almost to the door when the soft voice behind her spoke up.
"Um... Eila," Sanya said, hesitantly, "It's still early. If you didn't want to walk all the way back to your room, you could... here with me..." she said, her bright red blush shining brightly on her cheeks even in the dim light.
Eila smiled brightly, "Well... since you offered," she said, hanging her robe on the post beside the bed before climbing in. "But just for tonight, ok?"
YES!!! Loved it. More Eila + Sanya please.
