reply to your other comment: that seems quite plausible. The only counterargument I can make is that he says he's not particularly afraid of dying. He just wants to be sure that he'll see her again.
I find it fascinating! After all, you don't read of people sticking their schlongs into ghosts that often! Imagine how it would be like if someone walked into them while they are doing it in an oil barrel. All they could see is some homeless man who badly needs a shave and a haircut jizzing into the wind or in this case an oil barrel!Â
ED: I can already see the sequel to this story. Every year after the Ghost Festival in August and the lanterns guiding the dead are extinguished, some government shrink will pay him a visit after complaints of our hero streaking about naked, making a mess with his man parts and insisting on living in an abandoned house.Â
Oh, for sure. I like this chapter waaay more than I like a lot of average boy-meets-girl fare. I especially like that such a happy-go-lucky, relaxed, casual guy is actually really loyal and tragic... My heart!
But, yeah. I'll take a sad chapter any day of the week over a boring one! And, gotta tell you: I'd be delighted to see a book of collected stories about ghost sex.
Sometimes, love transcends life & death. And age as well, they used to be classmates before...well, you know. A lot of Fujimaru's stuff has this bittersweet tinge to it, with a sci-fi twist. Me like.
Ikeep throwing money at the screen, but no book is coming out :( That was a hot story with a great ending! I thought it might go post apocalyptic, but man!
I know this story is perfect the way it is and doesn't really need it, but with regards to my presidential duties I demand a sequel. Gives us their tearful eternal reunion, Fujimaru-sensei!
...Wow. That ending.
I have to say I wasn't expecting that. I thought it'd be a sad ending in the sense that he'd like, die and leave her behind or something, but now I kind of see why he wants to stay there even if it means he might die.
A sad, yet sweet story and I really like it.
I think he doesn't have a choice i.e. the world is already coming to an end. When she asks him to come with her to the city, I think that's her way of asking him to die so that they can be together in the afterlife and they won't have to wait a year to meet every time. It took me a few reads to be sure, but I think that's what she meant.
Ya, I think you are right about the city. However, I had a thought that maybe it is metaphorical. He lives in the 'old world' of the country side, self sufficiency, etc. That world is being destroyed by construction/modernization. As more and more people move to the cities, they leave empty houses and buildings. But he is the manifestation of the country side, so for him to move to the city, would be for him to 'die'.
The really weird thing I think, is for the ghost to pray at the family shrine. Shouldn't she be talking to her step-mom in the afterlife?
This didn't make me super sad, but it got my brain all tangled up. I think that if she can find her way to him every year, then he ought to be able to do the same when his time comes. So they ought to be happy in the end. Not that this ghost business makes sense, I mean ghosts having sex with living humans is already stretching the rules. I'm optimistic about this.
