I kinda agree with Gambler, but I don't really know anything about why I do, mainly because some guy online said that the second season was gonna be called The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. Which looks to be wrong, but from what ImperialX says some of the episodes are called that. So how would he have found that out not long after the first season was finished? Maybe they did hold back, but of course what I'm saying is purely speculation.

That's because we've read the novels. We know what's going to happen next.

It's a bit confusing because, as you can see from that list, only 6 episodes of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya are actually adaptations of the light novel series of the same name. All the other eps were from other Haruhi stories. As far as I know, the light novels are way, way ahead of the anime and so it's somewhat obvious to someone that's read the novels as to where the series is going next. It's just that they seem to be keeping The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya as the name for the whole franchise.

Jokes aside, the light novels were already a popular hit, at least with the Japanese, before the initial episodes of the "first" season got aired a couple of years back.But how many other popular light novels are pretty much ignored even after getting an anime adaptation? The only ones I know of that are anywhere near achieving the level of Haruhi are Spice and Wolf and Toradora!.
It is also possible that KyoAni had planned to release 24 episodes initially, but decided to air only half of them during its initial run. After all, there is more than enough material from the light novels to do so.
Perhaps we should do some research on how popular the Haruhi light novels are in comparison to other award-winning titles?

I know this isn't a comparison but apparently the Haruhi novels have sold around 3.4 million collectively in Japan. That means that roughly, on average, 1 in 35 Japanese people own a Haruhi novel. That's pretty fucking impressive. Of course, the reality is more like 1 in 140 own 4 Haruhi novels or something... Either way, that's an enormous amount of copies sold.
I showed two of my non-anime-watching friends chronological episodes 08 (the new one) and 06 earlier on. Well, all of my friends but one don't watch anime, so that doesn't really narrow it down. These two friends were very impressed by it; both seeming to genuinely want to watch the rest of the series.
