Yes it does tie-in to the anime series Angel Beats!. This series will tell the story of the SSS members before Otonashi's arrival.
Of course its currently being serialized, monthly at that, and at this point only three chapters are currently out, and luckily translated ^_^

Is it worth the read? I do want to find out more about the other characters, since the anime didn't exactly explain what happened to the rest of the members in SSS.
