Anime an Investment?

Do you think the value of your anime DVD's, manga's and figure's will rise if you keep it in good condition? Personaly I don't think any of it will. I keep them all in good condition and such but I don't think anything like DVDs gain value. Maybe limited edition sets, other than that once you remove the shrink wrap, it is worth less

Figures do increase in value once it's popular and very rare. The Saber lily figure by Good Smile originally sold for 100 and I've seen people sell it for 250 and 300, unopened I believe.

I certainly am not keeping any of my anime merchandise just to sell it again. I bought it so I can enjoy it not to profit.

I agree. Another example is the 1:4 A-Brand Uesugi Kenshin from Sengoku Rance (Red ver.), original retail price was $300, but not it's impossible to find one under $550-600...
I buy my figures because I admire the detail in them, I don't plan to resell.

Oh of course, if never sell them either, I never inteded it for profit, it was just a question and wanted to see what other people thought.

I don't buy anime merchandise.

My dad sold a bunch of Robotech figures a while back for a pretty penny. The old Japanese made ones not the crappy Korean ones (no offence). I personally don't buy for profit but if anything is worth enough and i need the money (like for a child, etc...) i might sell.

Figures? Absolutely. Manga? Definitely. Digital media? Yes, but not as much as figurines or manga.

As soon as something becomes a rarity, it sky-rockets in price. The rarer it is, the more worth it has on the market. You'll eventually find someone who's an accomplished collector, maybe he doesn't have that specific Manga from the 80's in his massive collection and he'll be willing to pay a very pretty penny for it.

It's a lot like art too, to some it's priceless, to others it's worthless.

Edit: Is it a safe investment? Far from.

anime and manga has potention to be an investment but unfortunately after the massive usage of internet and piracy this business has lost its price for investment.

Unused danmaku would sell nice.

For figures, 2 things:

1. Unopened and mint condition.

or

2. The person knows the value and carefully unwrapped it with gloves.

Collectors are so fidgety about fingerprint blemishes.

That also goes double time for animu themed games and all VN's on CD.

Ive got Hajime No Ippo on DVD but im not sure if it'll increase in value! (I just had to own it man and I doubt id ever sell it)

All the anime that i once had was ripped and sold days after i bought them, unless it some i want to keep. Need to make cash so i can buy more crap.

I'll try not to repeat the answers of some of the previous posts, but it's relatively the same answer. I do believe that, with time, certain anime goods will rise in value and one could make some serious profit from doing that repeatedly if they make the right decisions. However, I buy anime goods and such purely for my own enjoyment. To buy anime goods with the mindset of eventually selling it takes out the main reason that I bought it for in the first place. I understand that there can be profit made off of these kinds of things, but I really don't care if that one Rin Kokonoe Nendoroid or that C78 Dakimakura I got could be worth a lot more some day; I'm not going to let a perfectly good nendoroid/figma/PVC/etc. sit in its cramped box/package waiting for a new owner. My love for anime goods is like Kirino-chwan's love for imoutos, and to buy the items with the idea of only profit would be like denying a lost loli help: unthinkable.

I believe the figures, such as gundams, will go up in price depending how rare the figure is. Also original work from the artist of an anime will bring huge value. Other then that unless it's a rare item that a particular person wants. I don't think the original price of said merchandise will go up.
It all depends on the buyer, some people really want a pillow case with a sexy girl on it and would give top dollar for one that has not been ..."used". I am one of those people.

Of course, certain collectables will increase in value over time in regards to availability and demand. that being said, I have never purchased anything intending to sell it later on, ive even gutted all my DVDs into 160 slot cases so they dont take up an enourmous amount of space. If I was ever going to sell any of it, it wouldnt be for profit, it would be out of necessity, like your moving away and simply cant take all of it etc. I can understand how there would be some aspects of the fandom you could invest in however.

I don't think it is so much the thought of investment that drives collectors to purchase manga and anime-related merchandise, including figurines, mouse pads, dakimakura, gunpla, etc.

First and foremost, collectors will like what they are purchasing. Although I am not sure how to put it into words, don't my fellow Fakku members feel the same way at times: "I have this limited edition product that no one else has and I feel a sense of achievement in obtaining it." ^_^;;

Of course not, I bought the DVDs because they are good enough to rewatch, I enjoy having them displayed in my rooom and I feel better to the companies I bought them from, like why I stopped pirating. And yes, I got the Last Exile LE set I worked for during the summer, totally worth it despite the price tag. It's cool to have something you want, even better when it's the best. I'd never sell any of this stuff unless I *had* to. But even if the wife doesn't like it, I'll box it and store it.
