First and foremost, I'm not a SHAFT hater,
Comments around the internet (Paraphrased)
"Nisekoi will flop if it wasn't by SHAFT"
"Without SHAFT Nisekoi will be just another bland Romcom"
"I usually hate romcom, but I'm going to watch this just for SHAFT"
"SHAFT is perfect for Nisekoi"
"Any other Animation Studio will just make it into another Copy of Toradora"
"Any animation style besides SHAFT is boring"
Every one of these fanboys is talking like Nisekoi needs a crutch. Talking like Nisekoi cannot work as a standalone story. When Nisekoi itself has rivaled To-Love-Ru Manga sales when they were still in Shonen Jump. Everyone of these failed to explain why SHAFT is a perfect fit for Nisekoi.
To me who is still reading the manga, most of it feels like an insult.
And let's look at Episode 2, Shaft just down toned their Style and non of these fanboys notice it and like it anyway. All the backgrounds are "normal", with normal perspective, none of the usual style we see in Bakemonogatari.
In the end most never praised nor cared about the story, but in the end will always praise SHAFTs, doesn't matter what they did in that episode.
Did Shaft do all of the Monogatari's? I figured the Bake first season was done by a different studio than the one who did Nise, and so on. With Bake having a strong emphasis on back ground artistic cutaways and exposition while Nise, and so forth, substituted those with an increased emphasis on fan-service.
Bake first season felt, mildly, fresh while watching with the style they took. (I couldn't enjoy any other season as much as the first.) It really reminded me greatly of Soul Taker, another anime I really enjoyed. But I was able to enjoy it most for it's difference. After a lot of the "same", difference can make things a lot better than it normally would be (halfass answer to why people fixate on differences), people get sick of eating the same thing every day.
As for Nisekoi, to me, it doesn't have anywhere near a "strong story", but it's hardly bad, above decent I suppose. It's a lot better than To Love-Ru "story wise" (been reading both mangas off and on before either was announced to be an anime). This isn't a surprising pick as an anime. It's all about how well Shaft sells off the characters, Nisekoi is at a disadvantage compared to To Love-Ru in terms of the roster, so they will have to make sure the characters make an impact, if they want to compete with To Love-Ru sales that is. Story wise, they did the most significant part of the story well enough to leave an impact, the introduction of the relationship scenario.
I do think Onodera can stand up to Yami in terms of likeability (popularity), Onodera expressing a lot more emotion and range than Yami. Rivaling the "tsudere" impact and personality of Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
On a side note, I don't think sales can be used to equate the quality of a story, I could trow my opinion into the realm of game sales for example (since I don't really keep up with anime sales), but meh.
