I liked Master Keaton a lot, but for some reason I couldn't bring myself to like Monster... maybe because of the slow pacing and weird plot that turned me off.
Well Monster starts off slow but it picks up pacing later.
There are basically no filler episodes because each one is meant to be there to build on character development or plot. The show is 74 episodes long and very complex. I had to watch it twice to understand everything that was going on.
Most anime I watch makes me feel like not much work was put into plot or character development. When I watched Monster it feels like I am watching a professionally developed film. Everything from sound and animation to voice acting and plot feels like great care was taken to make sure everything fit.
Master Keaton was one of those shows that required little concentration and you could almost start at any episode and not feel left out because almost each episode contained it's own story. Also I usually had a smile on my face and a warm fuzzy feeling when finishing an episode of Master Keaton. Monster is a masterpiece but requires an investment in time to get through the complex story.
And to another poster. I have watched Gankutsuou and enjoyed it. The art style sure was different and the plot was intriguing although it got a bit weird at the end. I liked JJ Burnel's "We were lovers" at the end of the anime.
