Artist or Character. which matters more?

Many people say: "I love this character!" but what they are really saying most of the time is: "I love how this character is drawn by this ARTIST."

For example, these are several pictures of Suigintou from Rozen Maiden. All pictures are depicting the same character (believe or not)
First of all, drawn by peach-pit(original artist). silver hair gothic lolita in the middle is Suigintou.

As you can see, if you liked any one PARTICULAR picture of her, it bascially means you like the style of the respective artist. However, if you equally liked all the pictures, it could mean you really are fond of Suigintou as she is (her key features).

simply, pick an option: do you look for the artist's skills or the character's uniqureness in anime arts?

Generally, if I like a character I'll like most art of him/her. I can usually like unofficial art of the character, but sometimes unofficial art makes said character almost unrecognizable, that's what I don't like.

The new Dante is a good example.
