@Azreli: I wouldn't say that per se. I think it's because there's this whole culture on the sailor fuku presented to us through anime. I still don't believe sailor fuku looks good.

Sailor fuku doesn't look really good or cool, but for distinguishing and traditional-feel purposes, anime school uniforms should have at least a sailor fuku. The others doesn't make themselves stand out better. But this one has an asterisk for me.
I mean, vests and blazers make students look too dressed up. Sailor fuku, is distinct. Doesn't look too formal, distinctive, easy to strip and easy to tell.
If I were to choose, it would be sailor fuku for elementary, vests for high school and blazers for older students. Sailor fuku would only look good for the really young girls. I have to concede it doesn't look too good on cosplay, but wearing sailor fuku on cosplay will always net you the cosplay look rather than vests or blazers.

a once piece purely depends on its design...if your question is towards what kinda school they're from.
but that particular one piece would seem better on a elementary school girl because most kodomo costume designs are simple like that and to spread and stretch it out makes it look plain as you can tell by the picture

Well, can't really logicaly disagree; I like plain clothes on women, however, and because of that I tend to be labeled as 'unsensitive' by them ;D
Anyway, plain uniforms would probably suit yamato nadeshiko type carachters, but would be really bad with tsunderes, I recon.

heres a design i came up with (modeled by one of my lesser-but-still-damn-important characters) for a previous series and i'm using the priciple design of this as the basis for this new design but i'm open to anything new.
heres the initial thumbnail (no i'm not drawing the manga but i do the initial concept art to get things moving, so annoying waiting for collab artist to come up with ideas)

As you can see there are patterns on the polo shirt, now i couldn't portray it on a pencil drawing but those patterns are not sewn but rather painted on in dilute but highly wash resistant dye (its a work of fiction so such a thing can exist in my world ;)) resulting in a water colour kind of highlight which makes up the pattern. So alot of people won't spot the pigments unless they are looking rather closely or a darker coloured kind of dye is used.
On this new uniform i'm thinking patterned jagged holes much like the school emblem (no not on the "cheesecake" area but around the sleeves, along the arm and around the back and to prevent ripping the edges of these holes are sewn to frame the holes.
I'm not sure if i should use blazer (won't see the pretty lace-like holes), vest(you will but its kinda plain-i'm looking into the camisole thing but i'm debating to myself if thats the look for a distinguished school, there has to be a formal air to a school uniform) or one-piece (with sailor fuku being an option for the one piece-tho i do disagree with it, since it is a high school which alot of us generally agree that sailor fuku is for the younger age groups)

The camis began as a fashion statement, until almost every single girl in the school wore them. The school had banned many other forms of accessorizing the uniform (eg scarves, hats, different shoes, etc), but let us keep the camis. So they more or less were standard. Plus the fact that they made rules based on the camis (you can only wear them in white, black, or grey) rather than banning them, made them seem even more standard.
We had standard issue pants which were, honestly, quite ugly. However, a few smart retailers at the local mall sold 'knock-offs' of the uniform pants, cheaper and sexualized. Low cut and hip-hugging, with a little flare in the legs.

I DEMAND A PICCY! i seriously can't see a camisole (as awesome as they are in comparison to formal wear) on a school uniform...

Oh, you wouldn't see the camisole since it's worn underneath the shirt. You'd just see the lace sticking out from beneath the bottom hemline of the shirt.

@Vio: I'm so glad that someone agrees that the sailor-fuku is so overdone. I got a question though, where do you go to school? I mean, living in the U.S., most schools are public and don't have a uniform system unless you go to private school, and like Azreli, a pic/photo would be nice for reference.
I love sweaters on girls... especially those school girl sweaters. Too bad that wasn't an option.

well on mah series, alot of the girls customise the given uniform to suit them.
e.g. the ribbon is worn as a bandana to create a yankee appearance, some don't wear the blazer (ur supposed to wear the undershirt, then the vest and then the blazer)
the poll is for statistical data thats not just purely for the series but also for all of us to know about the nature of the otaku culture towards school uniforms.

putting extra notes on my design.
the students have created a custom where freshman leave the poloshirt's holes...because they don't quite get yet how free they are to do as they wish in the school.
while the girls on later years sew on a shirt beneath the polo to cover the holes with a different colour.
some replace the ribbons with ties, some convert the polo shirt collars into a sailor fuku design
others wear wizard robes instead of the blazers
and...so on...
well decided on my design now...but i stick to my demand of revolution! FOR THE SAkE OF HOT COSPLAYERS OUT THAR!!!!
