Heroes never die. Except in the few times that they do, but that's not a bad thing. That's a good thing. :D

They're pretty powerful characters and good ones that have great character development.

Well there is a few but the one I really cared about would be
Kamina from TTGL I could not believe that he was actually dead when I watched it
L from Death Note, to be honest I disliked the second half of anime after his death
Maes Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist my god how could you not like him he was awesome.

Here's one that nobody mentioned yet.
Hot Ice Hilda (Outlaw Star). Her death may have been a driving force for the plot and for character development, but she was still one of the more interesting characters in the show. At least she went out like a badass, though.

Agreed. She's one of the best characters, too bad from the beginning they've killed her. Without her Gene wouldn't have a ship.
