So as expected, I will update you on the film:
It was released on the 16th of March, but because of who I shipped it from, I got it today. Anyway, it is not a remake, it is simply the dubbed version of the original Clannad Th Movie. Going a little into the film itself, it differs quite heavily from the series (which is closer to the visual novel), such as Tomoya being rather indifferent to Nagisa for the most part, and Nagisa being alot more bold and outgoing than her VN counter part. Sunohara also plays a significantly different role, as he actually becomes successful later on. Ryou, Fuuko, Mei, and Minase (I think that's her name) do not make an appearance, Kotomi makes two or three brief, non-speaking appearances and Tomoyo and Kyou have a close knit relationship from the get go
Kouko Ibuki (Fuukos sister) is still teaching at the school, and is the new Drama Club adviser (unlike it being the Principal), and she and Nagisa have a built relation, she is also still Yusuke Yushino. On that note, Tomoya is already working with the Electric company, but he is on temporary leave, Sunohara picks up a job there as well when he finds out his parents are in a financial slump.
The story progresses with Tomoya not at all caring for Nagisa, until her play
which she does not finish, and just improvises from her own mind, which turns out is the completion of Tomoyas dream (it show him sleeping and after talking a bit with Nagisa, it goes on to say it's not so desolate, but there is a ray of hope), in the play, Nagisa "finishes" his tream saying they will meet under a tree of hope". Which he gets up, and confesses his love.
This is where a slight disappointment arises, luckily, it's not a huge one:
Essentially, ~After Story~ is crammed in the last 20-15 minutes of the TV show, and they kind of do it in a bad way:
At first it looks as though it is the point where Tomoya moves in alone, still dating Nagisa, but then he summarizes the part about her failing again, which is ok... but then they jump around (similar to this post) about how they were so happy, back to his appartment where he is depressed and moping in company of Tomoyo and Sunohara, who try and cheer him up, then to the doctors office, where he announces the great risk of her giving birth, to another scene of them on the beach, and Nagisa named the child, and Sanae, Akio and Tomoya choose not to tell her the complication. He randomly fills up a sink, then flash back to her death (which was terribly depressing). His dad comes over, and tells him (which was more subtle in the series) that Tomoya is doing what he did years ago, by abandoning Ushio. Tomoya is upset by this and tells him to leave (the fact there was no closure between the two, pissed me off in the movie). The next morning, Kouko and Yusuke rush into the Okazaki apartment, and force him to pack his bag, leaving to an unknown location, picking up Sunohara, Tomoyo and Kyou along the way. It turns out Tomoyas dad begged the couple to help him (although it would have made more sense had he begged Akio and Sanae) and this trip was "a heartfelt request" from a special person (Ushio, unknown to Tomoya). Tomoya strongly disapproves and demands to go back, but he is forced to search a platform for the "special person". Akio and Sanae are holding the child as Tomoya comes up on them, he turns around to be cornered by the rest of the gang. Akio sets Ushio down and she runs towards Tomoya, as she looks as though she is about to trip, the father makes a break for it and catches her before she hits the ground. Then in the back, a monologue starts, showing Nagisa in her wedding dress under the tree, and roll credits.
Of course, that was a brief summary, it was still an EPIC movie despite the changes, similar to how they reworked Air The Motion Picture from it's series counterpart, completely worth watching. They are two separate entities, but both effectively told a fantastic story (Believe me, I shed some man tears today...). The largest problem was the cram session they did, that was slightly annoying, but didn't detract from the overall meaning of the story, and on another note,
I didn't feel a complete closure from the ending, because had that been the VN or the series, it would still have a ways to go, so I wasn't completely satisfied ending on Nagisas death
, it was also different having Tomoya play a more neutral and pessimistic role rather than a supporting figure for Nagisa, and how she was more bold, not bad just different.
All in all its a great tale, and any fan of a Nakige or drama/romance should definitely pick this up
