Connection between Anime and building good morals/values?

Hi

I personally believe that there is a connection between anime and building good morals/values/beliefs. I was curious if anyone else believed the same. I don't watch television much but several times a week I flip through the channels and I rarely see anything that is educational or makes me think. I know there are exceptions but not many I know of such as The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, PBS, etc etc.

Has TV truly moved from providing content that makes people think and question things as well as develop good morals/beliefs/values. Since I discovered anime a few years back I have been both entertained and intellectually challenged at the same time. I grew up watching shows like GI-Joe, Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Voltron, He-Man, She-Ra, BraveStarr, and many other influential 90's shows and I believe they helped me to develop the morals/values/beliefs I possess today. Each show had something in it's episodes that was beneficial to me and helped me progress as a person. Those values have been built on from the many different anime I have seen. I think this is a tragedy especially considering how the average parent(s) let the television babysit their children and then the children grow up and the parents wonder where they went wrong.

A few anime I have noticed that I believe would be beneficial to children/teens are DragonBall/Z/GT, Most Gundam series, Naruto, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, Prince of Tennis(any sports related anime may inspire them to get involved in it), and Sailor Moon. I could list more but it would require more research. However, all anime is not for children and there are some that I would stay away from until the child has grown or unless a parent watches with them and explains things. I remember an article I read about a boy who convinced his friends to bury his head in a 1-foot deep sandbox because he wanted to imitate a jutsu he had seen on Naruto and died by suffocation.

I remember that too. It was sad but I had trouble feeling sad for a kid dumb enough to bury his head in a foot of sand. I mean come on, have a little common sense.

A kid showing common sense is almost unheard of. More so since many children these days are getting stupider by the generation. A child does not learn common sense on his own. It is one of the many things a child is supposed to learn from his parents. If the child knew that he would be putting his life at risk by depriving himself of air then he would not have done what he did. I am not surprised he attempted what he did, the parents should have been watching the show with him and making clear that he should not attempt these things and that what he was seeing was not real and he would hurt himself if he tried it. They also should have been watching the child while he was playing with his friends. I don't know where someone got the half-brained idea that children can babysit other children. These people obviously did and that scares me.

When I was a kid I thought the Power Rangers actually existed until I was told that they were just regular people acting out a part. The realization brought me down somewhat but it didn't stop me from liking Power Rangers. Shoot, I used to play Power Rangers with friends at recess in elementary school and I used to ride around on my bike pretending I was looking for putty patrollers, lol. However because I had been told that power rangers were not real it prevented me from attempting ridiculous stunts such as this boy did. Had I not been told, I might have tried a stunt that would have injured or killed me.

there is a study that anime, manga, and hentai wrap children minds and make them antisocial and mental(and their right) because of the japanese otaku murders and suicidal fanboys... thanks japanese freaks.

I think any thing can affect ones values and anime is no exception. I really don't get where your trying to go with this.

This is the same guy who wants to move to Japan because he thinks he knows how it is and mostly has an interest primarily in anime and seen a few culture articles on it.

I'm well aware of the OP's dream as I recalled reading the thread a few months back. If you thought me saying, "I really don't get where your trying to go with this", was amid at you, it wasn't. It was amid at the OP as I don't really get what he was getting at when he made this thread.

I would hate for anyone to get that impression of me so allow me to correct you. My interests in Japan don't lie solely in anime/manga. As a matter of fact if anime were to disappear from this world tomorrow I would still be interested in Japan. I am interested in almost everything to do with Japan; society, I am interested in education, morals, values, beliefs,religion,government,history and more. My interest lie in gaining a TOTAL understanding of Japan and then applying that to my understanding of America in order to gain an objective AND UNBIASED view on how the two countries differ.

Anime/Manga is a passion of mine, that's true, but that is hardly the only passion. Furthermore, I have done more than read in your words "a few culture articles". When I am not occupied with school I am almost always attempting to learn something new about Japan. Granted, I have not been to Japan yet but it is a definite goal of mine as there are some things I can not know without actually seeing the country. I won't turn this article into another defense of my beliefs. I simply don't want people to be influenced by one person's statements on what he THINKS he knows about me.

So I can blame all my problems and personal faults on anime now? Yay I found a scapegoat :P

But OT: Most shows for kids are made with some sort of moral value imprinted in the episodes, it's really no major difference now from back in the 90's besides the fact that you've grown up and sees things in a different perspective now. A kid that's getting "raised by the TV" won't get more fucked up that those who did it in the 90's or 80's.

But yes, there are a lot of anime/manga that "teaches" about "morals" such as friendship, playing fair and all that, just as most non-Japanese shows do and of course this affects a childs view on things, as everything do.

When did I ever claim I knew what Japan is like. I don't see how this is any different from wanting to know about any other country. I will admit one thing and that is that some of my information may be wrong but it will get rectified when I do go to Japan. Why don't you think a little before you stomp all over a person's dreams and call them trash. Every post you have ever made regarding my desire to visit Japan you have done nothing but try to bring me down.

There is a gigantic difference between the kind of programming we had in the 90's compared to now and it's clearly taken a turn for the worst. Cartoons such as Spongebob Squarepants, Kim Possible, and others are rotting the minds of children. They have also taken programs from the 90's and turned them into a mockery of what they were. Don't get me started on what Disney has done to Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turltes, just dont.

Also, I am no weaboo. Understand the definition of that word first and if you like I'll gladly have a forum fight with you about it. There are so many different interpretations of what that word means anyway

Personally, all I see you doing is conforming strictly to confirmation bias in all your aspirations for Japan.

This thread is a big blaring attempt of you trying to justify why it's good to be in anime and thus clarify why your whole attempt at loving Japan is justifiable.

Shit man. You're being ridiculous. Anime is just a hobby. It doesn't affect you much more than the shows you watch. Which is slightly.

What is even more hilarious, is that you took what is a correlation and are essentially trying to make it into a casual relationship.

This thread didn't start as anything more than me seeking the opinions of others on a random thought I had. I stated my own opinion first because I think when you ask someone for their opinion that you should state your own opinion first. Yes, anime is a hobby, I agree with you on that and you seem to think I spend hours a day watching anime and doing nothing else. FYI, I am a full-time college student in the middle of pursuing an AAS degree in Information Technology as well as studying for my MCSA and Network+ after which I plan to pursue my Bachelor's degree in Information Management Systems. Anime is only a hobby to me the same way I like playing video games, upgrading my computer,and exercising. I think somewhere we got off on the wrong foot but you have been a jerk plain and simple from the first post you made on any of the posts I created.

The last thing on earth I would want is a casual relationship with you. I'm sure the average person who meets you wants to slug you or worse. As for whether you think I know what I am talking about, what makes you think I care? I stopped considering any "advice" you offered from day one anyway.
