Dragonball Evolution : Evolution or a Step Back

Well the weather here in the Uk has taken a turn for the worse, and while stuck inside, after seeing the advert for the "Dragonball" Movie. I got to thinking: Is the movie as bad as everyone says?

I mean the scheduled release date for Australia is today, UK on Wed 8, and US on Fri 10. And anime fans alike are, on the most part, dreading it.

And on some level, I can sympathise. After all, for many it was their first anime series, most of us, I assume, can remember it as a part of our childhood. And honestly, this film can be seen as a kick in the gut.

But thinking about it, is it really as bad as they say it is. I mean, yes, the plot can be seen as a traitor to the original. But if it turns more children onto the franchise, and, eventually, onto anime. Is that not ends justifying the means?

I think it will kill the DBZ name." I thought it was'nt possible to kill" Also it won't bring people to anime if you don't know it'ss an anime you won't suddenly start watching anime when you here it. Look at movies like the watchmen, spiderman, batman among others. They are all comics but just because people liked the movies they didn't just become comic nerds. Movie adaptions fan's are different from fans of the original and they will stay different. Sure some people might move over but most won't. Also how the fuck can you fuck up DBZ it's the least complicated series ever.

I don't quite know but with most things that take after something and make a movie (Dead or Alive for example) they just plain suck. LotRs was something good until the 3rd one with multiple endings. It's all a gamble but knowing Japan and their shitty movies this is gonna burn. That's right I said it. Japan sucks with RL movies. Stick with Anime and Sushi. You ever see the Japanese Version of Spider-Man? It'll make you laugh so hard you'll crap yourself.

I would tend to disagree with you on two points,
[list]1. Its a Dragonball movie, loosely based on the Demon King Piccolo Arc.
2. I feel that the whole saga, from DB, DBZ and even possibly DBGT, are to ingrained in peoples opinions to be "Killed" by a poor Live Action Movie. [/list:u]



I tend to agree with you on that, unfortunately, this is a Hollywood release. So, although Asia has had the release for weeks now, it is actually lead by FOX. 'Nuff said on the Shiteness.

Personally, I think Stand-alone, the movie may hold. However, tied with the Anime, it may be seen with a failure. It would be interesting to see how the movie fares with those who know nothing of the Dragonball universe (If there is any in the movie going public).

True America got tied into this one. But somehow I feel that Japan doomed it. After all the Director is Japanese.

Edit: I'm wrong. Director is Chinese. Still doomed I say lol.

After watching the movie, had to refresh myself by watching five good episodes of Dragonball Z.

I'm going to have to agree with everyone here. This movie made me lose what little faith I had left in the movie adaptions of anime and video games. That faith had been slowly diminishing ever since House of the Dead and Death Note.

I saw a commercial for the movie on TV the other day.

If at the end of the trailer, if it didn't say "Dragonball Evolution," meaning, if it wasn't a DB movie, just a regular action movie, it would still look really shitty.

If the movie looks shitty without the franchise attached, and if it looks shitty with the franchise attached, then there's no hope for it. It's going to be shitty.

Let's just hope that it will pass quickly, and we can all forget about the pile of puke that was Dragonball Evolution.

I thought it was a good movie, as long as you take friends and expect it to be really bad. Then you can poke fun at it pretty much the whole time.

It was shit, both as a interpretation of DB, and as a movie itself. However, watching it was pretty fun. Went with a buddy who was just as pissed as I was, and had a great time throwing insults at the screen, (at least until the manager came and threatened to kick us out, which was hilarious).

So if you don't mind shelling out for a movie ticket, go see it as long as you expect it to suck, and are just looking for cheap, cynical amusement.

Let me sink my teeth into this one. My overall opinion isn't just directed to Dragonball: Evolution, which sucked total dick, but to the filming society that created it and other anime-adapted movies of fail: Hollywood, bite my ass, and stay the fuck out of anime.

Damn Hollywood(it should be called Moron_fuck_up_Mountain/M.F.M.) but they're not stopping there. They're shooting for Cowboy Bebop/Reeves wants to be Spike, and Full Metal Panic/Zac F_fuck playing guess who? I praying and hoping that they don't touch or think about doing a Live action of Hellsing. Please, don't do Hellsing. Please, don't do Hellsing.

Oh come on, it wasnt that bad. Sure, it could have done with a better storyline, but still, it was a fun watch. i have read too many a comment on how this movie adaptation was nothing at all like the original series, but that's the whole point, isn't it. Dragonball EVOLUTION. it was meant to show DBZ in a whole new light, not to please followers of the anime series. If you keep comparing it to the original series, than you will be really disappointed with this adaptation.

sorry but i dont agree. The Death Note movie franchise was movie adaptation at its finest. The twist in the 2nd movie where they deviated from the manga, was a very good twist and totally unexpected. However, they should have stopped with the 2nd movie(Death Note: The Last Name) because the final movie in the series (L Change the World) paled in comparison with the 1st 2.

The movie wasn't trying to show DBZ "in a whole new light." It was just trying to capitalize upon the success of the series without having to work hard to make a good adaptation. Instead of putting forth some effort, they just made Goku a high-school student and created characters who happened to have the same names as characters from the original series but no actual resemblance to them.

This movie is a piece of shit regardless of whether it's compared to the original Dragonball. It's a plain piece-of-shit action movie. That it's supposed to be Dragonball Evolution is just another travesty.

Spot on. Exactly why I'm pissed at Hollywood. Before it was the comics, now its the manga/anime - fuck off Hollywood. Let the Japanese make their own live-actions.
