honestly i found Mikado's character really dull and boring as the protagonists and half the time it seems like he's just a side character, that is until today, he finally took on a bigger role and it's implied that he is related to dollars gang
. That final shot of him was in some way, EPIC

Ever heard of "don't judge a book by its cover"? Fair enough that most viewers would often find characters like Mikado to be considerably lame so long as they do understand such an aspect is significantly on purpose. But more importantly, someone (@fakku) had finally realized and mentioned it! He who longs for an extraordinary life -- to live unlike any other -- is not just an ordinary timid kid after all. He who created Dollars is still one of if not the most intriguing(not easily-read) character in the series.

i am quite confused about Izaya, right now he seems to take support role from the side but in the novel he is the antagonist isnt he?

Well, like Baccano, the anime style is really loses on the main character.

It’s all in one’s perspective. Say, to Shizuo, Izaya is the most despicable villain of the story of his life but for someone like Namie, Izaya is just a well-renowned informant she can rely on in desperate times. Exactly just as how Yagiri Pharmaceuticals may seem to be the thorn in Celty’s smexy side, which in turn is simply but one of Shinra’s business associates.
As for in the light novel, I wouldn’t know. Like leryuuda was trying to say, there really is no singular character focus in both series. The two feature an ensemble cast of characters you’d either love or hate; it’s up to you to determine whose antagonist is who, for this is just as real as it can get.
Note: Baccano! had Szilard -- an awesome villain at that–-he created the loveliest creature of them all, Ennis* -- but even he didn’t function as the universal antagonist of that series.
