Its a sci-fi/drama/seinen themed manga, steeped in
Gnosticism/Gnostic Mythology, as are the characters' names and ideals that run in the manga itself. Story and illustrations by Hiroki Endo.
The plot is in the near future, as close as 60-100 years. The world is ravaged by a pandemic virus. The UN is in a state of panic, and is taken over by a new form of government, the Propater Federation. In the Virgin Islands, a research biosphere is constructed to work on a cure for the pandemic virus while being isolated from the rest of the world, before the the fall of the UN. And all this is prior to the events of year 2112, a prologue of sorts, to the main protagonist
Elijah Ballard and his growth. The rest you read yourself.
The art is beautiful. Compared to most mainstream anime, the characters are not blown or faced out of proportion. Though, facial expressions at times can leave much to be desired. The detail is really one of the best, comparable to Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell, especially detailed in robotics/mechanized units/inner workings of machinery. Background locations are not limited either, ranging from Mexico to India to Japan, all done well.
The characters are driven and play their roles well. You'll read about drug lords, scientists, molecular biologists, doctors, hitmen, mercenary units, government officials, nomads, puppet officials, cops and others, each tying into the story. Each affected by the virus and what their decisions hold based on how they deal with the worldly threat. From the protagonists names, you can also find out their role in the story if your read a bit on the history of Gnosticism.
The manga is like a combination of Ghost in the Shell and Naoki Urasawa's Monster and 20ieth Century Boys (imo).
Simply put: one of the best mangas you'll find out there (IMHO).
One of my penultimate favorites. It is, however, a rather unknown manga.
Nonetheless, I have found it, and now maybe you will share my enthusiasm for this top notch, yet relatively unknown manga.
Try this manga out if your tired of some genres or if you need a break from the moe~/ecchi factors.
