First, I want to say,"T.T Thank you god for giving us an awesome line-up of anime to compensate for Code Geass ending". And with that, I go to my topic.
I loved the Ef - A Tale of Memories, it was one of the best animes I've ever seen. It's successor doesn't seem to disappoint. We still get that same stylish ephemeral directing style as the first one, and the accompaniment is well placed yet again. Story wise, it touches on two important support characters from the last season, Himura and Kuze. Himura is still a wallowing depressed man and Kuze dives further into his obsession with school girls, so much so that he makes subtle notions towards an actual schoolgirl.
Which brings me to the new character to the series, Mizuki, a colorful lively girl who seems to have a more than just friends interest towards Kei(the basketball playing twin) who is the cousin of Renji. Renji by the way, is still with Chihiro, though we don't get to see her in this episode. In Himura's story there are two girls from his distant past, one happens to be an artist who (probably) has feelings towards him, and the other is the girl we saw last season towards then end to which we found out is Himura's sister.
The story is of course following the theme of music this time around, with Kuze dealing with this Fermata, which in musical terms means,"to hold the note for a desired amount of time",(yay Choir!) which can only be metaphorical to his own life, as we see at the very end that Kuze is not quite the person he portrays himself as.
Himura's story is set in the past where he meets with the girl from last season and another girl who is an artist that doesn't mind being completely naked for the sake of creating her piece. I'm not quite sure how this ties in with the musical theme but it's only the first episode.
I just love the fact that the staff for this series are relatively new to the anime industry. With this being Shin Oonuma's second full directing job and others as well, with Tenmon being the exception as he worked on the music for Makoto Shinkai's movies, still he is relatively new. I really should've been praising them about that last season, but whatever, I just wanted to point out how cool it is to see people starting out in the biz create such good work. It's a testament to their talent.
Euphoric Field baby!
I hope everyone is as filled with happiness from watching this as I am!
