I would like to point out, hopefully without inciting any rage, that Rebuild of Evangelion is specifically meant to be a re-imagining of the entire story. If you read the Wikipedia article there's a reference to Anno stating this himself.
For those who are confused about the original chronology of the series the order is this:
1. Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV series)
2. End of Evangelion
End of Evangelion happens concurrently with episode 25 and 26 of the series. The last two episodes basically look at the events of EoE from only Shinji's perspective after he decides to tang everyone (after Komm Susser Todd in the movie).
The other OVAs (Death/Rebirth) are merely an abbreviated re-telling of the entire series. These and NGE are the same thing, although NGE is better because it shows much more.
Now, back to Rebuild: any perceived evidence of Rebuild being a sequel is merely coincidental, and is all the aftermath of the Second Impact. The red sea for example is as a result of the Second Impact, not any previous Third Impact. The only line that throws a wrench into this is Kaworu's at the end, but this can likely be chalked up to a translation choice. A single sentence in Japanese can be said 5 different ways with 5 different meanings in English.
That being said I think Rebuild is awesome. I like that it is different, and I like how much more cinematic it has become. The action is amazing, and the pacing is much better due to the choice to shorten the story (i.e. the # of angels if half of what it is in NGE). Realize that this series is a standalone and enjoy it for what it is: great.
At Otakon 2010, North American anime distributor Funimation Entertainment announced that they have licensed Evangelion 2.0 and will plan a theatrical release followed by a DVD and Blu-ray release in 2011.[34] Earlier in May, British anime distributor Manga Entertainment had announced plans to release Evangelion 2.0 in the U.K. and were waiting on Funimation to announce production dates.
Fuck yeah theatrical release.
Also, I agree with the theory that this may be some sort of sequel. Of course Kaworu could be the only one who knows. Well, probably Seele would too. Can't wait to see how this develops.
The movie finally came out, I actually held off from watching any internet version so i can see it in glorious HD. The changes where kinda extreme, but where good none the less, and i guess what happened to asuka happened in the series in a different way anyhow.
I watched it...stream of course. it really cool, asuka is still pretty bitchy as I remember. this was definitely better than the first one, the third one should be quite the good watch too.
