The ending of the anime is the real ending from the Fate route of the VN....so I don't think that's the fail part of the anime. To me it's their attempt to mix-mash stuff from all 3 routes that is the fail factor.

Yes, it couldn't be compared to VN, but I've seen much less enjoyable series.
