First and foremost - FMA never looked better. This is not to be contested. Crisp and dynamic animation, sharper colors and contrast with more artistic drawing and style switching allow for a familiar yet superior experience.
Whether it ever sounded better, remains a matter of preference. I'm liking the sound very much for now.
The ED is funny and the OP is fuken' awesome.

The series begins differently than it's predecessor. While hardly introducing anything or anyone properly (seems that's what ep is 2 for) it goes right into the action with Ed, Mustang & Co hunting for a renegade ice alchemist.
While I definitely enjoyed the ep, I think it was a bit too fast and confusing for people without previous contact with FMA. Sucks to be them.
The faster pacing is probably something we'll gonna have to get used to since (from what I'm hearing) this is meant to be half as long as the first series (got no evidence for it, only blog comments). People are even speculating that they intend to do a fast-forward on the original material that the first series followed during the first ~13 episodes.

Also, as previously stated, most of the voice-cast remains unchanged (though apart from Lust, Mustang also sounds differently)

Anyways, the first ep don't disappoint and I'm eagerly looking forward to more. Goodbye Gundam - a far better series is taking over the timeslot.

So... it's continuing where previous anime ended, or is it more like a spin-off?

Neither (not that the first series + movie allow for much continuation). It's a re-make intended to be faithful to the manga. The first started taking detours at some point and while I (and many others) still enjoyed it greatly, the manga fans were furious.


BTW -- I'm hearing that the ep is anime-original after all. Anyone care to evaluate ?

The first episode of the original anime jumped right into the action too, then back-tracked to the beginning. I've never read the manga, so I don't know if this episode's a new original or not, but it's a beautiful work none the less. The style and sound are absolutely amazing, I've never been happier to own a Bose sound system.

Two interesting things not related to the actual episode, what's up with the perfect english at the commercial break? Also, anyone else notice Winry was getting tongue from her dog in the ED? I knew she was lonely...

Whoa, taking in all those characters just flashed me back to the first series. So many memories.

Can't wait to see what surprises are in store for this season.

Das while I don't agree with your Gundam commentary, I do agree that FMA this time looks much better. One thing though that got me completely off was how Colonel Mustang sounds different did his voice actor change? I liked the old voice better. Other than that it also looks like they are going to make the story a bit darker.

Also about the Fuhrer I'm kind of sad that they show right away an evil side to him. If I remember properly from the first series, he seemed ok most of first 25 episodes.

Even though it looks a bit more cartoonish, so far so good... Even though it's only been one episode there are alot of differences from the first series. I really don't want to see this only go to 26 episodes or so unless they make a season 2... It's a great story and I'd hate for it to go TOO fast isntead of enjoying the whole experience.

Expect new doujins with the start of the new series xD...

Woot! The season finally begins!

Something about the art I don't like but I'll just have to get used to it. Its like their eyes are too far apart and their skin colors are just wrong or something. Maybe I just hate the whole color scheme they are using. oh well.

Well I really liked the first episode. I don’t mind a filler start since the placed it before the events in Lior. Looks like they are going to do the gate events/Ed joining the State in episode 2 which is earlier than when we see the whole events in the manga. I don’t mind that either, as all that takes place prior to the events in Lior which kicks off the manga. I think its good as it gives a separation from the first anime. Yet doesn’t actually deviate from the manga story.

On the plus side I absolutly loved the glimpse of Father. and it was nice to see they set the time frame of Maes Hughes right. Since Elicia Hughes, had no Elric involvement.

Animation was wonderful, voice work was done great so far(though it going to take a little to get used to some the new casting), great opening. All in all I was quite pleased myself.

Yeah, a new voice actor. Funny you should mention gundam BTW, since Mustang's new voice is that of Lockon's in G00.


Lol at the fansub groups doing the show BTW. Apart from SHS, gSS and Eclipse also picked it up plus 3 or 4 unknown groups. Reminds me 'bout the sub wars during Geass :)

I know I probably sound crazy, but AVOID the Eclipse subs. This is the first time I've been disappointed by an Eclipse release. Not only are their subs actually worse than gSS. Yes I know how strange that is, but they even translated "Equivalent Exchange" to "Exchange of Equivalences". It just shows that they don't have knowledge of FMA.

Go with gSS. They're awesome.

Since I'm struggling with HD space, I went for Shinsen-subs 200MB 848x400 h264 release and found nothing particularly wrong with it.

I'm kinda disappointed at a remake of the entire series since it smacks of "milking a cashcow that's already been milked". As for the episode itself though, very enjoyable, but you'd think that Ed would put up a better fight.

One more thing - wtf is up with the ED? I mean the song's good, but the animation sequence was totally not what I expected.

Yeah, the ED song and the clip doesn't blend with each other.

When I saw one of the preview in Gundam 00, I thought that song was the OP. :roll:

Just so everyone knows, the Ice Alchemist was not in the manga.

As for retelling the story from the beginning, it kind of makes sense. I just remembered that something kind of important was changed in the anime adaptation near the beginning.

So somebody finally noticed.. While the art is still great, there is something about the art that is inferior to the first series. i just can't put my finger around it but the first season was better, not miles better, but better. just my opinion.

and by the way, great OP song. for some reason, the fight scenes in the OP songs are incredibly stellar, that its even better than the actual fight scenes in the series. again, just an opinion.

but yes, a much greater anime has taken over the timeslot of the gundam 00 series. that series was disappointing to say the least.
