Saji did seem to play a better role in S2, though I prefered how he was portrayed as the civilian 'observing the changing world' in S1 (same case for Louise, annoying as she was in S1). Though I have to admit, some of his idealistic whining was a bit annoying during the earlier episodes of 00 S2. (At least he's better than Katz from Zeta Gundam who was not even idealistic; he was just an idiot.)
@Marina: Hmm...yeah, her role in S2 was supressed drastically in comparison to S1 where she essentially provided an 'alternative' (or almost as a conscience) view that conflicted with Setsuna's "fight, fight" demeanor.

Saji was an ok character and I liked him a lot better than Kira. He's probably one of the only lucky guys from the franchise that still has his girl after turning psycho.

And how much time passed between season 1 and season 2, 4 years if i am not mistaken. that seems an awful short amount of time for a total noob to become a pilot. not to mention that she had to undergo rehab due to her injury.. so dont discount the possibility of marina becoming a pilot (personally i hate the idea). anything is possible in the gundam 00 world.

Well Johann did say before he blew up that they were created to be Meisters and that's it.
@udou, well Louise may have had 4 years to be a pilot but if you noticed, she still kinda sucked. She only killed 2 people in S2, the Realdo in the beginning and Nena (obiviously the outdated Throne Drei is no match for the Regnant)

Hehe, kidding aside, you mentioned the 'tragedy character'. this sounds a whole lot like kira yamato of SEED.. except, kira does the fighting while in 00, saji is just a spectator in setsuna's battles. but hey, if saji is what makes you like the series, i have nothing against that.
As for Marina Ismail, yup, i agree. Outside of playing Setsuna's potential love interest and conscience, she has been utterly useless. However, the same could be said about Louise in season 1. Who knows, maybe Marina ends up piloting a gundam in the upcoming movie (yeah like that can happen..)
If you hang around the Mecha community you'll be surprised how much detailed the people there could be regarding the mechas in anime, I don't think my explanation is that detailed though. They even go as far as asking for the dimension of Potemaios hangar to further understand the reason why the 0 Raiser and the 00 Gundam have to be launched separately. The one I'm providing to you are only the basics, I'm not much into explaining things in details...
Regarding Marina piloting Gundam. That would be funny but won't be happening, though it reminds me of a funny Gundam 00 vid.
This vid will give you answer whether Marina can pilot a ms or not...
