Tell me one thing. What do you see when you're looking at a lolicon doujin ? Childs having sex. Right ? Wrong.
You see a pile of ink on some sheats of paper.
No you don't. If that was all you saw, you wouldn't bother looking at it. It is symbolic of pubescent characters in suggestive poses. It is fictional, but it still means and stands for something.
Okay, I can see you're point, being all offended with those rape, loli/shota or even guro doujins, but as long as it did not happen for real, as long as it stayes behind the cover of the book, or a dvd cover ifit's a hentai it's awwright with me. Can't you agree with this ?
It is great that it doesn't happen for real, but the ideas and attitudes that are forged from allowing such things still shape the society that people live in. I don't mind argument of whether or not it should be allowed, but to say that it doesn't matter because there are not actually people displayed is ignoring the power that images and words carry.
OP - Japan doesn't have strong censorship laws, but this is because they don't need them, not that they have lower standards. There isn't as much offensive material in media - save for late night pornography. However, even those channels are usually premium or very soft core.
Mainly, Japanese culture has caused mainstream media to censor themselves. There is no need for strict censorship laws in a country that does not have much offensive programing in the first place.
