So I watched the first 4 episodes of Higurashi: When they cry and now my mind has turned to pudding on episode 5 after keiichi died and suddenly came to life like nothing happened along with everyone else on episode 5.

I have seen this anime as well, but as you said, it screws with our heads. It seems to change its storyline every few episodes. I'm not sure.

Like everyone else said, when you watch both seasons it will all come together. That's what the series is all about; there's a reason why it does that, and you will find out what it is.

Don't watch the anime. Buy the game, support the author, and enjoy the original vision (If you could handle the replacement music for the first 4 arcs)

Do you know how many shitty and unnecessary changes they've made? The entire meaning of the anime isn't even the same as the visual novel!
They took an amazing story about sacrifice and blame, and changed it into yandere-fanservice and "friendship defeats all!"
Just so you know, the ending is entirely different, the arcs are out of order.
And just to show an example of how ridiculous the changes are: In arc 2 Keiichi and Co. are supposed to enter a tournement where he wins MULTIPLE stuffed bears.
In the anime, Mion just cancels it and gives Keiichi a SINGLE bear. This might not seem like a big deal, but the way Mion reacts to it later in the plot makes her a whiny bitch in contrast with the original VN intention where Keiichi gives everyone BUT Mion a doll (He gives Rena two.) This IS relevant to the Mion/Shion conflict, and I'm upset they changed it because it made Mion look like a whiny bitch in how she was interpreted.
The game tournament is also important for Rika's conflict in the Minagoroshi arc, as When They Cry in general frequently uses a game board metaphor.
At least read the manga instead of the anime. It's still inferior to the VN's story, but at least it was more loyal to the original vision than the anime.

The manga is exactly like the anime as well, except with less atmosphere (no music or genuine screams of blood). Both are slightly more fleshed out (HAHAHA PUNNY) than the anime.
Anyway, like whats been said, keep watching, you'll find out. You won't miss anything of importance by watching the anime rather than reading the VN or manga.

The series works like that.It is divided into series of arcs,which will tell different views,stories or events.
The arcs will make sense eventually,so just hold out.
The Visual Novels tell more in detail, and the mangas are pretty good at telling the story.
