The culture clash was very well portrayed, but it could have been improved were they to actually have the people speak French, as the narrator has.
[font=verdana][color=green]I understand your viewpoint, but this is a Japanese anime, remember. They actually want the viewers to understand the language themselves, without having to read subtitles (just like we have to). It's a similar occurrence to what happened in
Zero; both speaking the same language, but not understanding each other. It's just a triple trip for us; as we know they're speaking French or Japanese, but we also are reading English. But, I'm glad to see that that confusion was dealt with in a relatively quick manner.
Now, onto my thoughts on the first episode.
[font=verdana][color=green]Overall, I liked it. This is an anime that snuck up on me, so it is a nice surprise. It reminds me of Aria and Gosick in it's feel so far which, considering they each got a 9/10 and 8/10 respectively, is a very good thing.
Whilst, to start with, I found Claude's reactions to the Japanese culture annoying and over the top, I still liked the fact that he never accepted it from the very beginning. It does highlight many peoples viewpoints on other cultures. I am curious to see how this anime will breakdown his barrier regarding the Japanese culture. However, I was very pleased with Claude's reaction to the smashed butterfly; you could have forgiven the director to have him have a very angry reaction - just like in most other anime - but he actually just had a controlled rage. It is a lot more effective than an outburst, in my opinion, as he is normally quite quick to snap.
I haven't read the manga, but I imagine that that Picture Book will spring up from time to time throughout the anime. It is her treasured possession, after all. Could be treated as a guide for her understanding 19th Century French culture.
But, 5000 Francs for the Kimono...that's an absolute steal. It was a beautiful kimono too. Hopefully he gets that back.
[font=verdana][color=green]I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.
