It seems to be a recent trend. There's really no current shows out there that I'm interested in. They all seem to fall within two categories, romantic comedy, or a by the book magical adventure. Where is all good stuff at?
For some reference,I want to see more stuff like Gurren Lagann. The pure energy and great storytelling has not, in my opinion, been matched yet. Code Geass, while over the top, was fantastic in my opinion for the intense moments and just pure entertainment. Death Note, an anime that literally had me at the edge of my seat and had to force myself to stop watching. Clannad, Kanon, and Air, anime that has brought me to tears.
More importantly, more than story, is energy. A lot of anime recently just seems half-assed. There's no energy behind the productions. The energy and aura behind Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, and even K-On! I don't mind a cliche story or characters, but if it seems like a lazy production, I don't care. And by energy, I don't mean action. Eden of the East had plenty of energy in its production, despite its slow pace. Baccano had energy, despite the seemingly at first convoluted story.
Am I the only one who hasn't been interested in a current show for a long time? I feel like I'm really not trying to keep up with anime, but all of it seems so derivitive and...basic. Most importantly, there's no energy. No desire to differentiate itself from others.
Though a lot has been said from your first post. It still boils down to what you brought up in this quote so forgive me for going back to it.
I would like to start by pointing out that most if not all of the shows you brought as your examples were pretty much, more or less of a phenomenon in their own way.
Quickly I could say that most of all you are looking for DRAMA in your animes. DRAMA is one of the hardest things to bring out in anime. Drama alone doesn't work either. It needs to be a well cohesive story that brings out more than just one genre to the front. Or simply said, You need to have some pretty amazing characters to compensate.
Let's take a quick look at this season's (which is almost over) and previous season (those that spilt into this one 13+).
The main theme for most series is either romantic comedies (more romance in one, more comedy in others. I am purposely forgetting anything ecchi related as most series that focus on Ecchi/harems are devoid of a well stringed storyline.
Since I usually have no interest in shoujo/yaoi/yuri series I will completely ignore those as well.
I think we have Katanagatari, Durarara and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood as good series that involve multiple themes and have DRAMA written all over it.
However that doesn't mean that other series were worthless. I loved Working (ongoing) and Arakawa under the bridge (ongoing). Both of those series are pretty good (Both Comedies with a little spec of romance).
I think that nowadays we have become too strict on anime. We are expecting too much. Most of the series you named are big time productions with tons of money. Where you can expect amazing visual effects as well as good storytelling and characters. The discrepancy in budget affects greatly an anime production so of course you will see some pretty lame anime most of the time. However it's only lame if you start and compare it with big time hits worldwide. I think we need to accept some anime's for what they are and stop complaining about it.
To be honest though I'm quite fond of romantic comedies no matter how dumb, cliched or rushed the animation/story is. So I might be less prejudiced against the current anime times.
I am eagerly awating July as there are three series I have my eye on.
Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakama-tachi
Amagami SS
Kurenai (2010)
As for this month, I have my eye on
-Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu
-Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail
I might have written a bit too much. However I think we shouldn't expect a new revelation in anime storytelling and animation at every single anime season.
However I do realise that some series really cut off on their animation budget and we are left with terrible animation.
