A new Last Exile anime series from the studio Gonzo has been announced, "a new series of Last Exile with new story, main characters, and mechanical designs. The story is centered around Fam, a girl from an aerial family in an adventure set in the open skies."
EDIT: First Fam PV is out!
Hard to tell from the PV, but the CG seems much better it was in that old pixelated preview image from a few months ago.
Director Koichi Chigira, critically acclaimed character and mech designer Range Murata, and production designer Makoto Kobayashi are all returning from the first Last Exile anime. Hitomi Kuroishi, the same person who did the music for the original Last Exile, and Code Geass, is producing the music for Fam. Looks like Gonzo is serious about this.
Some characters… Pics in spoiler. Click to see uncropped.
The main character, Fam Fan Fan (who thought of that name?) is being voiced by Aki Toyosaki who also voiced Yui from K-On! and Uiharu from Railgun:
Spoiler:
Giselle is voiced by Aoi YÅ«ki, known for recently voicing Tooru from A Channel and Madoka from Madoka Magica:
Spoiler:
There is also mention of Tatiana Wisla being VA'd by Eri Kitamura, who also voiced Saya from Blood+, Yui from Angel Beats!, and Rin from Kodomo no Jikan. I think she was a character from the first series? Not sure why she's in this new one.
There's also a certain character named "Dio Eraclea". Anyone who watched the first series may find this somewhat... Odd?
Spoiler:
And no clue why the heck they designed a vanship with 100 engines...
(yes, those are Claudia engines, not guns or anything)
And it looks like the rest of the vanships got a facelift:
Anyway, I'm pretty excited for this, as the original series was really good, IMO. I saw it on Netflix Instant Watch recently. I recommend watching if you haven't seen it yet. (The dub is surprising good, too)
Recently Gonzo has been going downhill, so hopefully Range Murata and the rest of the original Last Exile team can make this good.
EDIT: My 100th post! Woohoo? Not really anymore as this is a repost...
EDIT: 15 April 2011: Condensed some posts and information instead of doubleposting.
Ah HELL TO THE YEAH!!!! That was my first and FAV anime series, I can't WAIT for this, the original was SO FUCKING GOOD! My God THANK YOU for this post, I will +rep you for a MONTH!!!
Sorry I can't contribute, I don't know any Japanese, you made me happier now than breaking up with my ex!!! And ordering Clannad ~AS~ dubbed!!!
WOOO HOO
Oh and why not have 100 Claudia units, can like, out run space cops or something...
I also hope they do as good s a dubbing job as the original. I'd love to see their choice in cast. I'd love to help haha.
Another update, with some messages about the earthquakes and tsunami and stuff. Apparently some anime con in Tokyo was canceled so the preview screening was also canceled... Oh well.
And another ship, Google Translated as "Fourth Fleet flagship federal Adesu
'Senapati'" FIlename is "mecha_shinsoku.jpg"... Reminds me of a horseshoe crab
Cannot wait for this either. I love Range Murata's art.
The CG for the ships probably will look a lot sharper, considering how much cheaper it's gotten to do CG on top of 2D animation. Hopefully they won't cloud everything over with clouds like they did in the first series.
Hmm… They really thought out the ship designs too. They posted 3D test renders of the ship interiors as well as their exteriors, even down to the separate rooms. They even rendered diagrams for separate mechanical parts of the vanships.
I have a sneaking suspicion Gonzo is going to be rendering much of the environments in 3D. Take a look at 0:30 in the PV, and note the door opening and the handrails. Also, the vanship right after that looks like it may have been cel-shaded.
My god, how did I not find out about this until now? I love last exile. Shame we won't see the old cast oh well, they probably couldn't expand much on Lavie and Klaus much more, so I guess it was a good call. I do love the world it's set in though.
Here's to hoping that this series will be as good as original Exile.
Last Exile was first "Wow" anime I watched, and God-or-whatever-you-believe-in forbid that they would mess it up.
But so far it looks good. The airship design and all is still as whacked and awesome as ever. It reminds me of Roman architecture in Mucha-esque world.
Spoiler:
And is it just me, or did last seconds of that promo showed Exile landing on the Blue Planet?
Well, they revamped the entire site. http://www.lastexile-fam.com/
And they have a new story intro/summary page, except the text is in an image, which Google Translate doesn't work with...
Took me a bit of fishing through the site's CSS files, but I managed to get this image from the site's front page:

That was it and [spoil]if I learned correctly, the "Blue Planet" is Earth.
Some more characters announced, might not be major characters though.
Atsushi Abe (Touma from Index, Ambrose from Gosick)[/h] as "Hein"
Kenichiro "KENN" Ohashi (Kazuma from Air Gear, Judai Yuki from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX)[/h] as "Fritz"
And yet another ship:
And yeah, it is premiering at Anime Expo 2011, and most of the staff will be there... Except Range Murata.
Funimation took the unusual step of licensing the series for DVD/Blu-ray home video release before the series even started airing.
Apparently a "Last Exile Trading Card Game" was announced... Okay...
Studio Gonzo is apparently going to rebroadcast the original Last Exile in Japan some time during July.
And.... According to the official Last Exile blog, the new series might start airing this fall, October 2011. Although it seems it's not completely official yet?

Well, Anime Expo has passed, and here's the new info!
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/convention/2011/anime-expo/15
An exclusive preview screening of the first episode was held at AX, and ANN wrote up a brief review about it, and it seems to be a pretty positive one.
They also posted a copy of the transcript of the Q&A segment, which answers some questions about the new series.
And yes, it has been confirmed as a Fall 2011 anime series, airing this October.
so many dramatic twists! seriously this story has me hooked...I'm already wanting the next episode. also I like the ED!
Right there with you!
Also I am calling this right now. Fam. Claus and Lavi. She totally has to be! I just feel there is a lot of resemblance. I mean, I think a lot of time has clearly passed, considering the technological improvements. This does not fully explain Dio's situation though.
