Here I am watching Macross for the first time. (Well, the first time not including Robotech.) And for an anime made in the early 80s, it holds up surprisingly well; as long as you can forgive the things that have since become Macross staples and some other things as well. Granted the animation is still totally 80s with reused animation and the occasional cross-eyed moment. But as a character drama (rather than a space opera), I'm still liking it as I find the character interactions, dare I say it, "realistic".
Edit: Forgot to add a synopsis for those who are too young to know of this series.
In 1999, an alien spaceship crashes on South Ataria Island and makes the human race aware of other life in space. Ten years later, the ship is reconstructed and christened as the SDF-1 Macross. However, on the day of its maiden voyage, an alien race called the Zentradi make their appearance on Earth—thus beginning a war that would change the history of both races forever.
