Far as I know this is what happens,
Alto-Hime comes back and Sheryl wakes up.
Even though it was just a "foreshadowing", I'm happy with the end.
Parts that I LOVE:
-Captain Jeffrey Wilder surfing and obviously more Air time from him.
-Isamu Dyson still active.
Rated it 10/10 in MAL.

Answers from Shoji Kawamori himself.
The triangle
On the Sheryl/Alto side. Kawamori answered that their meeting in the past was made to have a greater impact of how they touched each others hearts. Because they had time constrains in the first movie. He liked to add it to show their attachment.
On Ranka-> Alto. He says that this time she's able to convey her feelings to Alto (in words). So her feelings settled in her (aka it gives her peace of heart that she confessed).
Sheryl & Ranka. Sheryl became someone important to Ranka, as she could understood perfectly what she felt, in her singing and her romantic life. Ranka was the same for Sheryl. Their bond surpasses rivalry, they are "binded/tied together."
Alto: what happened to him
He's alive after all. Kawamori was quite shocked people were upset about his disappearance and assumed he died. He assumed the audience would watch the ending more carefully: he definitely folded.
Sheryl's awakening
He also heard people's laments of how poor Sheryl's she won't wake up. He says that they must have been really unsettled about Alto's missing that they didn't see "it" (her awakening) when they actually should have see "it". At least after the audience watched the film at least three times, they realized this (that she's awakening at the end). The ending credits also have hints about this, pay attention to what characters appear (hypothesis: he means the "dShudistab"? For those who don't know the black credits feature Sheryl and Ranka giving a rather cheerful duet concert together... and talking to each others as musical background. Thus, it seals Sheryl is awake and singing, this was intentional). He says we can imagine what happens to them (Alto, Sheryl and Ranka) afterwards.
But I guess that Alto/Sheryl wedding poster that was featured in Macross Ace this month leaves scarcely little to our "imagination."
Upcoming 30th Anniversary (of Macross):
Macross F is finally complete with this film (note: which was only promoted for the love triangle resolution. "End of triangle" was the subtitle after The Wings of Goodbye). Unless he's going to do a magical girl Ranka spin off (jokingly said), there's nothing more to tell as far he's concerned.
In 2012, there'll be a new approach to the Franchise (which means it'll be a brand new series).
