They are neither plants nor animals. They differ from other forms of life such as the micro-organisms and the fungi. Instead they resemble the primeval body of life and are generally known as "Mushi". Their existence and appearance are unknown to many and only a limited number of humans are aware of them. Ginko is a "Mushi-shi" who travels around to investigate and find out more about the "Mushi". In the process, he also lends a helping hand to people who face problems with supernatural occurrences which may be related to the "Mushi".
Mushishi it revolves around
(what I believe is) Japanese tales and myths. Which all have moral tales to teach that transcend the outline of the basic stories. Each episode is different, telling a story that have nothing in common with the previous or next episode. Ginko is the only link between these episodes.
Ginko tries his best to make the right decision in these moral situations. While every decision he makes isn't always right. You'll see the consequences to them. This also makes Ginko more believable. These quotes might help you.
"It's only human to make mistakes." "Life isn't all sunshine and rainbows."
[size=11]The plot is similar to Bakemonogatari. It's funny. Meme would've been a mushi-shi if he was in Mushishi.[/h]
Don't get me wrong, this anime isn't all about this life form called mushi and how Ginko studies them. No instead it's more about the relationships between human beings. For example the episode "String from the Sky" isn't about a mushi that captures the girl and throws her to the sky. No, it's really about the trust between a man an a woman that claims to love each other.
The music soundtrack was fantastic, it fits the mood perfectly. And the animation is also very good. It reminded me of Studio Ghibli.
Overall, I loved the anime. Surrealistic yet believable. Well written. An anime that for once was original. A superb anime. 10/10 would watch again.
