For me id have to choose a bastard sword. Possibly one with a heavy blade. With enough hand dexterity and shoulder/forearm strength, these blades are hard to beat. Close combat anyway.

polearm, spear or poleaxe are best. axes dismember/behead and spears disembowl/skewer. get them from a distance and lop off their weapon arm or any extremity b4 they can do shit about it. and like the sniper i may include an "HOLY SHIT!" weapon on my belt, or maybe even a switch blade in my shoe (like Joker from TDK)

I personally think firearms are a modern 'sword' if you will. While any fool can get lucky and hurt/kill someone with it, it does take a long time to learn and understand how to truly work firearms efficiently, and thus they become more effective. (Same as swords) So I'll stick with firearms as my choice.

Scythes. I don't care if they are supposedly useless in combat. There is no alternative weapon for Death. Besides, they create such beautiful ends.

Your garden variety AKM. It's the most prolific weapon in use by people who want to kill each other (...and not mug, protect their cowardly self or blow shit up) - and it's also the weapon of choice by the armed services in my country.
It's closely followed by the H&K G3 and FN FAL the two second most prolific weapons in the world.
...and finally the M-16 if you live in the States.
The rest of you sword maniacs can prance your overgrown blades and sharp & pointy things all you want. It's damn hard to find a properly made sword nowadays. Hell I've seen and tried good replicas, even had a little training with them. Killing with those things takes skill and years of practice - hmm... about 10 years daily practice - to be able to do it at the drop of a hat.
So wielding swords is nice and fulfilling but in an actual fight I'll stick with firearms.
...more like fucking stupid. I had seen those things actually built. They're damn unwieldy (you're better off wielding a tea spoon) and the dead weight of the blade throws off your aim.
