To be honest it's pretty hard to really tell what Goodnight PunPun (Oyasumi PunPun) really is about, except saying it follows the life of PunPun - a boy drawn as a bird without wings.
This manga is very deep, and very different visually and story-vise. The manga is drawn very realistically - except for PunPun and his family, that are (as told earlier) drawn as birds - which usually scares people off before they've given it a chance as they think it's "freaky" or "scary". But I haven't seen anyone being able to picture sadness and lonelyness so well.
At the surface PunPun seems to only be about PunPun's misfortunes. How he tries to cope with his dysfunctional family, finding his dreams and losing them, trying to understand his own existance. But after reading a little bit you'll come to understand it's a lot deeper.
Personally I find to be about life itself, about growing up, to mature, and finding or even creating your own path. About the dark, wicked side of humanity and about the madness around us - both the kind we see and the kind we brush aside. But also about those small moments that fuels the fire inside of you that keeps you alive, no matter how short it is.
It's a manga that grabs you and gives you a lingering aftertaste that you can not really put my finger on, it leaves a curiosity and a hunger for what may happen to poor PunPun next.

Started reading it a while ago (I'm at chapter 50 now) and when I started it, I wouldn't have thought it would be this deep.
I mean, what do you expect from a manga with a bird-like thingie as the protag ? Not this really. But I don't mind it, it's cool this way.
And something occured to me.
Anyways, decided to check in, and tell all this. Maybe now some users will come by and converse about this, ehm, interesting manga, yeah. Interesting it is.

I read it on a whim when I first saw it on manga fox. It is indeed deep and interesting. Don't know how I feel about Pun pun, but he's a good enough character for me to stick with the story.
