Tokyo Raven
First they establish "reviving the dead as impossible and deplorable" but if the protagonist wants to do it with someone in the main cast, who's to argue, the little girl originally denied that... screw her!
Everything in the series was way to obvious and... boring for me... I continued to watch it out of free time.
The only interesting thing I found in the series, was the world of (shaman) magic, but that's the last thing they put any focus on, constantly rolling out new concepts and ideas with little to no explanation or forethought. With most of the world relying on present day established norms, a hundred plus years of magic really didn't change crap.
It all just felt lazy on part of the creator.
2/10 in story/character quality
0/10 in enjoyment (I can't think of a single thing I enjoyed...)
D-frag
Kind of saddens me how much of the manga content they cut out, by comparison, the anime felt like a somewhat hollow shell of the manga, for me. Pink hair, I forget her name atm, played an insignificant and meaningless role within the anime, for example. Aside from that, it was the exact same experience I got from the manga.
5/10 in story/characters quality
7/10 in enjoyment (strictly as a comedy), (accounting for novelty)
Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha
I didn't find the story specifically strong in general, there were some pretty meaningful and deep parts at times, but I feel like they were wasted through a lack focus and/or strong follow up. To rephrase it, I felt this series could have been a lot deeper but sugar coated quite a bit to remain in a positive focus.
6/10 in story, 4/10 in characters quality
5/10 in enjoyment (The steps back from darker conflicts killed it for me since they step to the edge as often as they did)
Noragami
The only thing I can really complain about is my hatred of cliff hangers. The staging of the world and the divisions is well done, without going into too much detail about them. Characters personalities and desires come off well and are well used within the world. Conflicts feel genuine and characters are come off easily as identifiable with. Despite the "RomCom" elements, I enjoyed a series not revolving around it, for a change. Was/is a great story of maturity and acceptance even.
I felt like there was so much more that needed to be conveyed, but was understandable within the constraint of their run time. If any series this season deserves a S2, I feel this one does, but pessimism leads me to believe it most likely won't.
9/10 in story, 10/10 in character quality
10/10 in enjoyment (Was one of the series that drove me crazy waiting for.)
Kill la Kill
I have a certain bias for these "over the top" cliche "good versus evil" stories. Watching this greatly reminded me of Toppa Tengen Gurren Lagann, though I still hold TTGL in higher regards, I still very much enjoyed this series.
I very much love the wackiness of the series, by the end, I had stopped recognizing the lack of clothing, which I found hilarious.
If I had one complaint, maybe the pacing of the beginning versus the mid and end. So much time was spent character building, that by mid way, a lot of things were glossed over so quickly, in which, if given more time, could have been developed more. Such as, Nudist Beach, or the girls father, as much as the story conveys, "he was someone who hated the mother for almost killing their child and undertook a noble cause of defiance afterwards". What type of parent he was to Ryuko was never conveyed.
8/10 in story/character quality
10/10 in enjoyment (I hear theirs an OVA, joyfully anticipating it)
Wizard Barristers
An incredibly deceptive opening and pretext of story. The story, very surprisingly, did not turn out how the initial story seemed to illustrate the series to be about. Even the opening had more, if you exclude the mech, magical action than the actual series (imo), (Blonde "cuts a falling plane in half, for it to explode afterwards, in-front of her"... This never comes up in the series).
This was quite misleading, which only reinforces the idea that the creators were not sure where to take this concept. The artistic approach was really nice, showed a lot of quality, but wasted on a directionless show. Well I guess it wasn't directionless... There was a consistent story behind the scenes, but it really lea up to a coin flip conclusion. Outcomes decided "just because" that's what the characters want.
I was expecting something with more meaning, dept, and significance considering whose behind this series. But all the conflicts and characters feel sugar coated.
4/10 in characters/story quality (Most of the cast is left as explored as they are from the first episode)
6/10 in enjoyment (Despite how much I rag on this series, I was able to enjoy quite a bit of it)
(I know their is another episode left, but I don't think it'll change my opinion much)
Cat Girl Nuku Nuku T.V.
Considering it's vintage, maybe it did somewhat well in it's time, but it doesn't hold up well. The series feels completely directionless and only there for the sake of a character and a specific setting, "boy meets robot girl" x "boy meets cat girl".
1/10 in character/story quality (cliche side character archetypes entertained me)
0/10 in enjoyment (was so bored, I barely paid attention)
Cat Girl Nuku Nuku OVA
Similar to previous review. This one was thought out a little better, but filled with the same. Especially the ditzy but kind hearted and optimistic main heroine so predominant in 80-90's anime.
1/10 in character/story quality
3/10 in enjoyment (may be a nostalgia filter in this case)
No-Rin
Idk how or why, but after 9 weeks, I decided to give the show another chance, despite my disinclination towards everything "Japanese idol and their glorification", related. But I decided to watch the second episode, and found that they intended to do more than glorify the occupation. That they wanted to be somewhat educational and had some good jokes in their, shuffling through all the crude sexual ones such as "the highest quality panty" scene.
Though, the show is kind of a mess in it's focus and delivery. Very often feels like unorganized director is in charge. Especially in regard to how much of an educational show they want to be.
Quite often I am reminded of Moyashimon, which I view as a strong springing off point that they seem oblivious too. I did think the "Anti-GMO" episode was interesting though. But I wish it wasn't left as a "completed argument", seeing as the discussion is still open. But the tackling of the vilification of it for simply being unknown was interesting.
The characters were, nothing new, with a small exception to a character in the main cast having dedicated feelings for someone other than the protagonist. Never thought I'd see that from this kind of series.
4/10 in story, 2/10 in character quality
5/10 in enjoyment (I know I've seen the "single female teacher lusting after men" cliche for the last 10 years, but I still find it entertaining, especially this time around.)
Redline
I had no idea what to think going in this other than, so like, speed racer? Holy hell did I love this series. Protagonist being a strong bridge between Onizuka and Dandy, with the added bonus of being good with the ladies.
The world they build, the attention to characters and their own goals, the conflict between them... Was all done so well, and in only the duration of a movie. They spent the right amount of time on each, making the watcher want to experience so much more by the end.
The movie hooks the audience well in the world and it's characters conflict and moves the watcher to identify with the cast. Nothing feels over exaggerated or forced.
10/10 in story/characters (I'd want more story/world elements, but I'm content due it's duration)
10/10 in enjoyment (Had me on the edge of my seat, screaming in the middle of the night, for the protagonist)
Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru
I don't remember exactly why I didn't watch this when it first came out. I suppose the first episode didn't convey the quality/direction of the series well enough for me. Gave it a second try a few weeks ago... I hate myself for giving up in the first place and I am glad I watched this.
This show was right in my ball park for comedy. Right up their with Nichijou, Azumanga Daioh, and Zetsubou Sensei.
It's well thought out and delivered(past 1st). Some of the jokes are just... too good... cracked me up crying... (I'm loosing it).
8/10 in story, 9/10 in character quality
10/10 in enjoyment (ridiculously funny)
FLCL
Decided to re-watch this, makes me reminiscence the days of toonami and anime in adult swim...
This show embodied quite a bit of what caused me to fall in love with anime.
There's not much I can say other than, I still want so much more... Their was so much detail they left open ended for the world of this series that I want to explore it... I want to see what their "space" is like. What's it like to be a "space pirate". What is Haru her goal exactly. So much material was made in such a short series, and with it all being so open ended, he created a giant world for this show, which only adds onto the quality of the story, especially the protagonist and his plight(s). Maturity, love, age, insecurity, longing for change, ect...
10/10 in story/character quality
10/10 in enjoyment (I can watch this a hundred times and... well I think the lack of knowing what I don't know would drive me to Japan to get the creator to write it out for me)
Seitokai Yakuindomo
I was really hoping, even a little, they would push the story somewhere. In a somewhat forward direction, considering they kept adding character elements outside the jokes, though I guess, in itself, those were jokes.
I know there is one episode left, but having watched an entire series, just to have the one meaningful episode at the end, kind of... not my thing.
As for the quality of everything else, it was a constant role out of sexual innuendo's that lead to easily forgettable jokes with no meaning or significance. Not that it's bad, but not particularly in my range for comedy.
1/10 in story, 2/10 in characters (the only world element is another school and all the characters are sexual punchlines)
1/10 in enjoyment (I enjoyed the first season a bit more, like a 3-4, but that's probably due the fact they had character creation and relationship progression)
