So I just read the TV Tropes article about Serial Experiments Lain...
Its left me feeling rather uneasy, and paranoid about the stability of reality.
I watched a couple of episodes of it years ago and was rather puzzled by it. But now I've read the TV Tropes article, the Wikipeida article, Wikipedia articles about the what influenced Lain and just thinking about it makes me want to scream in unthinking horror.
I'm too scared to watch it because I'm afraid that if I do I might lose my mind.
its not bad at all its an amazing series that changed the way i look at something, as well as how i observe god. the first six episodes are really slow but dont let this discourage you.... i dont see it as being a mindfuck anime but hay if you do so be it hahah i recommend you read the short manga after you finish watching it.
i guess it would be considered "deep" by some people
the name of the manga is serial experiments lain nightmare of fabrication
But yeah, it can be a bit of a mindfuck, especially if you watch the whole series straight.
There is a lot of subtext throughout lain, which if you aren't looking for, will fly straight past you.
If you do watch it, be sure to watch it a second time, to pick up on the things that you may have missed.
And then possibly a third time.
The key to enjoying this series is to sit through and watch it with an analytical and critical viewpoint, much like how you would do with an essay.
If you are looking for a series to wind down too after a days work, this isn't it.
(The guy who was the mastermind behind this series, Abe I think it is, is known for making amazing anime series that can be overly serious and completely unique. If Lain is too much for you, I recommend watching Haibene Renmei instead, just as a contrast as to how amazing the series he makes are)
