Way back, when Gundam Wing came on Cartoon Network, I didn't care much for it. It was the first Gundam show I had ever seen, and I just didn't like it. I didn't like the characters, the fact that it seemed like Power Rangers (five teenagers with five robots, real original), or the overwhelming love that all my friends threw upon the series. It wasn't terrible, but it didn't deserve to be called one of the best anime series ever.
When the original Gundam came on Cartoon Network, I didn't have cable, so I didn't get to watch it. I was very sad about that, because I knew that it was the type of show that I
had to watch. Months later, when I finally did get cable again, I caught part of an episode late one night. It was the one with the Black Tri-Stars. I saw Amuro shoot one of them, and the suit exploded, and the guy died. And that was it. There wasn't a huge scream; tears weren't all over the place. Amuro wasn't cursing himself for killing someone, and the fallen soldier's comrades weren't swearing that they'd get revenge on Amuro until their throats were hoarse, but there was still a glimpse of the pilot's face before he died. At that moment, I knew that the original Gundam was meant for me.
It wasn't until years later that I got the internet (with good speed) and was able to download the original Gundam, but I am very glad that I did watch the series, even if it took me a long time. It is dated, and the animation can be downright horrible at times, but it's worth watching. People may not appreciate a lot of aspects of the show, taking for granted what it did to the mech genre and to anime itself, but it's still a landmark, and I think everyone should give it a try.
Currently, I am rewatching the series, fansubbed this time, and I'm enjoying it more than the first time. Though I know what's going to happen, I recognize the different mobile suits this time, and I have fond memories of them and the characters. It's a great experience.
As for SEED, I have never seen the series, but I had the chance to watch it when it came on Cartoon Network, and I passed because I saw a person wearing a mask that was just like Char's. I don't need to watch a series that's just a remake of the original Gundam, that was my train of thought at the time. I think I'm going to have to watch the series sometime in the future, since there are so many mechs in it that people mention, and so many people have watched SEED, but it's pretty much on the bottom of my list.
yeah i need to download it to and re watch.I caught it on cartoonetwork i watched yeah i know kinda lame but i heard the raves about it and i watched it and went....wooooo....i liked it it had good action a decent but not to extavigant amount of romance and it was just plain cool to watch giant robots demolish each other.
