Its definitely a good series. I find the beginning half to be better personally, things are a little more believable. Later in the series things get going to crazy proportions. Still, a fun little ride and worth watching for sure.

I didn't end up watching the second season, the first season for me is where the Anime ended... get's a bit to wild after that.

One of the best big robot animes of the 2000s. GAINAX has always been pushing out the classics (GUNBUSTER, Eva, KARE KANO, FLCL, Mysterious Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, DAIBUSTER). If you like this series, I'd recommend watching another GAINAX anime afterward.

Unnecessary? Did you not see the tragedy and character development as well as the driving major crisis and events that spurred the ideals of each person in the anime as well as push the relationship between Nia and Simon to a depth of devotion that transcended the meaning of "love". Season 1, story wise had the maturity of a kid while season 2 aged with Simon in the underlying themes, while holding on to the ideals presented in season 1 that laid the foundation of season 2, and was a lesson about straying from the path, and the stubborn narrowed mindedness of adults' paradigms.
