the underdog along with manhua, amerimanga,la nauvelle manga etc etc.
though not really underdog as to say...
anyways we see our first major manwha in Lee Myung-jin's Ragnarok along with a few other titles not present...
manhwa has come along way compared to japan's large manga industry
its first record was around 1908, younger than japan's manga in terms by almost 2 centuries, referring to woodblock prints of course
like manga, manhwa was influenced by american comics when american soldiers were still occupying korea after WW2
unlike japan's manga, however, manhwa was rarely put into animation adaptations,
if none at all.
however, what is really intriguing is that the most popular manwha were put into live adapations, which were mostly 'shoujo' category anyways haha
some of you who live in the philippines may have had watched those dramas yourselves with the most terrible voice overs imaginable! haha!
though rare in most cases, manhwa has produced some truly great stories, some you might have read through a now defunct tokyopop productions sometime ago when manga was really starting up
titles such as Priest or Ragnarok or Model, I.N.V.U., Honey Mustard, Rebirth, Blade of Heaven, Dragon Hunter and such and such
and i confess here right now
my first manga was not manga... it was manhwa, here in the US, in the back of a library for multi-ethnicity books and mags
in the serial weekly korean publication known as 'Junior Champs' (now Comic Champs) back in the early 1990's
both my first taste of manga and manhwa and probably my first step into wanting to be a comic artist haha!
with the first recognizable titles in manwha such as NOW, Rebirth, and Chronicles of the Cursed Sword, and Zero:Beginning of the Coffin.
and then with manga at the back in which became very popular by far almost 8 years later the titles Tenjho Tenge, Chrno Crusade, and a few others stuck in the back of my head...
so...with the rise of manhwa and 'manhwa-ka(?)', now we come to more recent manhwa, or should i say particular 'anime', especially with the confusing title 'Kurokami' aka Black God
why is it confusing?
its creators were Korean, Lim Dal-young and Park Sung-woo, which makes KuroKami manhwa
but, it was published and serialized by Square Enix manga productions, so it makes it manga as well(?)
quite confusing there ehhh? well this the rise of manwha and their creators, a much more spearheaded starting point (imho)
2 other titles share this as well
the titles known as Freezing and Onihime VS, both made by korean manhwa creators, both published and serialized in Comic Valkyrie, which is part of Kill Time Communications publisher in japan
so... from here on out, what are you thoughts on this? and maybe list some manhwa faves haha!
