The first “official” Touhou anime has been announced.
The anime project is to be produced by ufotable, and is intended as a celebration of the 10th anniversary of anime store Animate’s mascot character “Anime Tencho” (“anime store manager”), probably best known internationally for his appearances on Lucky Star, although otherwise his anniversary is likely a matter of supreme indifference even to Japanese anime fans.
Though apparently not an immediate indication of a full TV anime, speculation now centres on the prospect of a full anime now Touhou appears finally to have received permission for a formal anime adaptation (as opposed to the earlier doujin affair).

The anime studio ufotable has announced on Friday that it is participating in two projects to mark the 10th anniversary of the ANIMATE mascot character Anime Tenchou, including the production of the "Anime Tenchou x Touhou Project" animation project.
The ANIMATE character goods store chain is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Anime Tenchou mascot character with 10 projects. Project 01 is new commercial footage called "Anime Tenchou GekijÅ-ban," which ufotable will produce. Project 03 is "Anime Tenchou Collabo 10-ban ShÅbu Round 1," in which ufotable is producing an animation project that combines Anime Tenchou and the dÅjin game franchise Touhou Project.
Both projects will appear at the ANIMATE Ichioshi BishÅjo Matsuri event which will take place in Tokyo on November 20. Other projects to be shown at the event include IS (Infinite Stratos), Oniichan no Koto Nanka Zenzen Suki Janain Dakara ne—!!, Steins;Gate, and OVA ToHeart2 adnext.
There will be a special version of the original Anime Tenchou theme song that will accompany the new commercial footage. Tomokazu Seki is singing as the Anime Tenchou Meito Anizawa character, and original creator Kazuhiko Shimamoto is rewriting the lyrics.

On Friday, Touhou Project creator ZUN posted on his Twitter account that the "Anime Tenchou x Touhou Project" anime is a derivative work, so he does not know the details about it. Later on Friday, a Twitter user named show_fb asked ZUN about the "Ikebukuro Hakurei Jinja" entity that is listed in the copyright notice for an image of the "Anime Tenchou x Touhou Project" anime. ZUN replied that he is not involved in that entity, and added that he thinks it is a pen name for the people drawing art in the derivative work.
I'm definitely interested in checking this out. I've read some Touhou doujinshi and the characters all seem really neat. I've never tried playing the games, though, but maybe watching this will make me want to check them out.
I kinda LOL at this hype because it's kind of misleading.
Well, turns out it'll be about Anime Tenchou and Touhou casts might be just a guests. And to think many people hyped up about 'official' touhou anime...
Anyway, here's ZUN's twitter post where he denies his involvement:
And the translation (by Nameless Fairy in Pooshlmer):
"To answer the frequently asked questions, The (Touhou) Anime made by Animate are their Fan-made works. They may publish it at their events like any other Touhou Fan-made works, so long it does not strayed from the conditions.I have nothing to do with the production of it at all, so if you want to ask questions regarding the matter, do ask the people from Animate."
So basically he said it's another fan-project (like Maikaze's one) by Animate. That thing aside, I'll still watch this though.

Thanks for the heads-up. And LOL as well... peoples' assumptions grew from rumour to news, and eventually blown out of proportion just because there are Touhou characters mentioned.
But "fan-made"... I like the sound of it. Sort of having its own folksy, unshakeable appeal. I'll be watching these as well.
