I haven't bought an anime DVD in years, and I have no plans to buy any in the future. Except for the original Dragon Ball, because that shit is awesome, but that's just a maybe.
Shit's too expensive. And there are very few things I'll ever rewatch. I'd rather spend the time watching stuff that I haven't seen before.
When I have money, I do like to buy manga, because I like to be able to read while kicking back in bed, and there's a much greater time-to-money spent ration with manga. $30 for a DVD can give me less than two hours of entertainment, while $30 for manga can get me at least three hours of entertainment.
As for the whole "watching online is illegal," there are legal alternatives. Crunchyroll, for example, is free and legal. That doesn't change the fact that it's still illegal to watch the shows on other sites or download them though.

I do stream, but usually for sampling purposes, when I like it after that, I'll dl.

They've come out with more complete box sets for like $45 but those are usually series not worth mentioning or short series of 13 eps. I'm more of a music-/bookphile so I haven't bought much anime for myself, but if my boyfriend really likes an anime he streamed, I do buy the box set for him, and he's bought a lot for me as well. He has pretty good taste, too. It's nice to kick back and have a marathon every once in a while. Torrenting is the way to go, and you could search through the torrents for DVD rips, so you'll get quality subs and (hopefully) quality vids. Usually a lot of seeders supporting a torrent means that it's pretty good, so you won't waste your time on low-quality mishmash.

It was one of the first mangas to receive large fan scanlation online. I can imagine that subbers and fan translators played a large role in getting it out there so it would be popular when it was finally licensed.

It depends on the show as to whether I buy or not.
Shows like Eureka 7, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Gurren Lagann I bought.
While long running shows like Bleach, however much I may like them, I wont buy... Its just a waste of money at that point.

If it's a long-running series, the price has to be incredibly low. If a series has 100 episodes, and they release five box sets with twenty episodes each, I'm not going to buy the series if each set is $50. That'd be $250 for one series. The high number of episodes may warrant a high price, but at the same time, I'm not going to have that much money to spend on anime, and I'm (probably) not going to buy just one box set of a series. So, for a long-running series, between $20-30 for 15-25 episodes would be a good price, I think. And I believe that sort of thing has been done already, with Yu Yu Hakusho and DBZ.
Single DVDs, with only 3-5 episodes on one disc, are almost never worth the price, and they're not worth the hassle. If they're $10 or less, I might consider them, but I doubt it unless I see the entire series sitting on the shelf. I've had the first disc of Banner of the Stars sitting on my shelf for years, and I'm not going to make that mistake again. (Only having one part of a series, I mean.)

I agree with the prices you put up, Shaggy. 30 bucks for a whole series sounds reasonable. From a person who puts all the stuff toghether's point of view though, I think they may feel like they are getting shafted. 30bucks/24 eps= 1.25 per episode. Too good, imo.

there aren't any original ANime DVD in my country and everthing was the Illegal version. And if i must buy the Original through some Internet site,it will cost me so much more. One DVD containing 3 episode cost me $50. Heck,I'm not that rich to spent my money just for the sake of 1.5 hours of fun.
