what you like SUB or DUB?

I shall do my best. I've been watching dubs so long now I've developed a tolerance for it lol. The only series in recent times that has got me was Tears to Tiara O.O;
Anyway, K-on! won't be released down here till July-August I think, so I still have a while to enjoy my sanity :P

Dubs. Although if it's subbed that won't turn me away at all (Shigofumi) but if it HAS a dubbed feature, I'll be watching that, even if they are terrible (Lucky Star)

I apologise for almost double posting, but this topic reminded me of a similar one I posted in a while ago. Back in December 2010, I wrote this about the 'quality of american dubs':

'You have no idea how much I thank dubbing for allowing me to do something else while watching an anime, otherwise you have to focus entirely on just watching (especially if it's a sub-par series or one I've seen before and just putting it on in the background).
As an English speaking audience we are MUCH more critical on dubbing since we are around English speaking people all the time, we grew up around them and know the mannerisms, dialects and normal ways of conversation, so when we hear something that isn't quite right we pick up on it much more readily and are much more likely to label the dub at a lower quality of work . Personally, I've never been around a real world group of Japanese folks conversing. I'm not sure of when or what they are saying and what to take as sarcastic, what regional dialect they are using etc. I can't be a fair judge of wether Japanese dubs are GOOD or not since I can't understand what good or bad is from my background of not speaking Japanese. Even if I learn it, I will still be from an English speaking background and that would influence my own Japanese dialect.
When I first started watching anime I only thought the Japanese audio track was better because everyone told me that was the case, and I wouldn't say otherwise because I didn't know what was good or bad anyway, they may all be good, they may all be bad. It's fair to say there could be just as many bad Japanese dubs are there are English ones, but until I learn the language properly I'm not going to be able to say either way, and it doesn't matter if other people tell me what's good or bad since it's all a matter of personal preference.
I myself am in the minority though saying I prefer the dubs. I've listened to them my whole life so I can 'tolerate' basically all dubs imaginable. I actually enjoy a lot of them, but I understand why everyone likes the Japanese audio better, there can be no lost in translation moments or misinterpretation there, but as far as I'm concerned as long as you are provided with both audio options, you've really got nothing to complain about.'

Then again, this isnt about what is better, its about preference.
Most like subs, but there are plenty that like dubs as well.
Its good to see some people saying they enjoy dubs, or even both, heaven forbit :D

I'd look for a dub first. That way, I don't always have to read to understand what is going on. I can actually multitask...which I am bad at...

Depends on if i can understand what the fuck their saying.. ie ghost in the shell to haruhi..

You know, I was planning to write a post about why I generally just watch dubs if they're available and how dubs seem to be better than they used to be, but then you went and did that for me! XD

So yeah, I usually go for dubs if they're released, watch the first few episodes to test the waters and see if there aren't too many characters with bad dubs, and then choose whether or not I'm going to switch to the subbed version.

Sub all the way

Sub cause there only a few dub once that really fits the anime and because some dubs anime are like they just some pick some random bystander in the street and ask for them to voice act a anime.

I prefer dub for certain anime's.. It all depends on whether or not the english dub voice actors are retarded or not.. Watching Bleach in dub, was alright, but i preferred sub. Watching air gear dub was horrible.. like everything was retarded (in a funny way) then again, i read the manga first, which is a billion times better.

Generally I prefer Dub.. sometimes i prefer it due to the jap voice actors sounding like they are getting raped everytime they talk (seriously, some of these anime's i've watched, they gasp and they sound like they are getting raped..)
But I do enjoy both. All depends on the voice actors and the quality of the subs. I suggest not buying anything from malaysia.. the english subs are horrible :|

Honestly, I feel that people latched on to subs at some point in the past when english dubbing was in a very ugly place (Too few voice actors, too little experience, as little money spent as possible) and have refused to reevaluate their beliefs since then. The english dubbing groups have improved by such a large margin since the 90s and early 2000s that it's ignorant at best, or willfully misleading at worst, to make certain comparisons.

You are perfectly justified on simply preferring subs to dubs based on how the voices sound, at least if you take it on a case by case basis. God knows you can find any number of voices annoying, personally, for any number of reasons. But considering dubs inferior as a generality is silly in this day and age.

The fan subbing community is pretty damn obnoxious at times, to add fuel to the fire. There is tons of unprofessionalism that is either tacitly accepted or worse, approved of.

All that being said: I prefer dub, all things being equal. If the dub is quality, I am not going to watch it subbed (until, for example, I watch it again. That's a good reason to switch). But there are a number of series were I have felt compelled to watch subbed.

If you ever watch Shingetsutan Tsukihime, that has some horrible dub... then again, it was a pretty horrible anime.. the manga was glorious, and the anime just failed miserably :|

I don't consider dubs to be anime. They should be labeled as tools used for torture and psychological warfare

(I have heard a few dubs that are "alright" but i would still not consider it anime cause, well they kill off everything that is anime apart the art.)

I never considered it a stupid question, but, in my opinion, subs are the only way to properly translate anime.

The proper way of watching anime is untranslated native japanese audio and no subs.

Depends on the anime and genre. I usually find action/shōnen styled animes to be much more enjoyable dubbed in English. It always seems like Japanese voice actors have difficulty with the "angry" or "macho" voice acting you often find in those types of anime. Examples being Dragonball Z/GT, Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, etc...

Other than that there are only a handful of specific anime that I find better dubbed rather than subbed, such as Azumanga Daioh.

So, general rule of thumb with me. Subbed, unless it is an action/shōnen (some seinen) anime then it is probably better dubbed.

ENG Sub. Can't stand ENG Dub. Yuck!
