That would be the fight of the century xD Still, depending on Yamamoto's skill with Kido, he may be able to restrain Whitebeard enought long enough to land a fatal strike... plus his zanpakuto has control over fire, which could allow Yamamoto to fight mid to close range... and perhaps long range, although that may be limited...
On the other hand, Whitebeard can cause shockwaves with his Devil Fruit powers, and he's pretty handy with his halberd-thing, so that covers long and mid range... he probablly would do really good in close combat, considering how strong he is (enough to stop a boat), but I don't think they've shown him doing hand-to-hand combat yet...
I honestly can't say who the winner would be in an actual fight between these two titans of the anime world, but I personally think that Whitebeard would probably be the most likely victor of the fight, if only for the fact that he's more physically able than Yamamoto while also retaining a highly useful super-power, although depending on the surroundings that are located near the battle ground would also be something to consider... Not sure how shockwaves affect flames though...

Possibly WB can dispel Yamamoto's kidou using Haki,one hit from the Pops and Yamoto will be done for. Or so until he decide to release his Bankai

To all that just says "Whitebeard wins!!!" state your reason to why you belive he would win against Yamamoto and so on.
This is not a popularity contest where whichever manga the character is in decides the win (which is why i didn't include a poll).
To start of some argumentation for the, so far, losing side:
Yamamoto's Fire which can disintegrate solid rocks >>>>>>> Magma Liquids rocks.

Those flames are a joke to the heat needed to disintegrate rocks.
