LA as in LA, California? I am assuming, so then the only one(convention) that comes to mind is Anime Los Angeles, which is Jan 7th-9th.

dude you are not the only one going to his first anime convention. Although i am going to Anime Expo, my friends really aren't down with anime and such, so i am going alone. :(

I was thinking about going, but just to have a look etc, ALA isn't a convention I usually go to, I've known ppl you do go to every year, but since I didn't plan ahead, chances of me attending this year are low. Have fun though and take lots of pics for us.

well just go to the fakku booth which I'm sure will be there and ask(or pester) jacob about it. he'd be cool enough to tell you whats going on.
